Beautifully and creatively written - honest, powerful and intense. I‘m not sure what age it‘s written for, but I appreciated it as an adult, reading it practically in a single day (less than 24 hours).

I‘m glad I read this book again (required for a class, after reading it a few years ago), as I appreciated it more this time, but it didn‘t impact me as much as Jemar Tisby‘s and Bryan Stevenson‘s books.

This book was a delight to read. I started it in the evening before going to bed, & I found myself saying, "Just one more chapter ... I'll just read until I get to day 15 ...." I was at Day 25 before I finally turned out the lights after 1 am, & finished it the next day before noon. Graves writes as if you're having a conversation together, with warmth and wisdom. Being a 9, I saw myself on every page, & I've marked highlights in every chapter.

I don‘t usually recommend a book before I finish reading it but this one is amazing. I‘ve already written my assigned paper but am taking my time to truly read and not just skim this one. And I‘m looking forward to a conversation with him in a small group next week about this book - can‘t wait! Now to finish the book before then 😁

Referencing electrified light-rail systems with power transmitted by a third rail, the author says, “In politics, ‘the third rail‘ is any issue so controversial that it can‘t be addressed with much hope of success. ... In many churches and denominations around the world, the subject of how men and women relate in the church has become a third-rail issue.” I‘m about halfway thru - an interesting in-depth look @ gender differences in the Bible.

Interesting book discussing how art is viewed within the evangelical perspective. Even if the reader isn‘t evangelical, it‘s a helpful perspective in regard to a large number of US Christians.

BBooks Sounds really interesting,.thanks for the share 🙂 3y
Tomigirl44 @BBooks I hesitate to post some of the religious books I‘ve been reading, as they‘re not mainstream books, but I figure someone else (like you! 😁) may find them interesting. I got to be in a small group conversation with this author a few days ago - really neat person, and enjoyed hearing more about his journey/experience subsequent to his book. 3y

I read this years ago (pre-Litsy) and it‘s haunted my reality ever since. It was horrifying, appalling, eye-opening and riveting. It‘s come up in conversation over the years, and it‘s a large part of why I have no desire to go to Florida (sorry, any Floridians). And it‘s on sale for $1.99 - I think for the whole month of January! I look forward to rereading it.

Jennifer3 I read it a few years ago pre-Litsy and with a friend. Haunted is exactly how I feel. I talk to people about it and try to entice them to read it. 3y
Tomigirl44 @Jennifer3 I‘ve also encouraged people to read it in the course of our conversations; as a northerner (grew up on the Canadian border) the world I read about was so foreign to me it was hard to believe it was part of my US history. 3y
Jennifer3 @Tomigirl44 It is depressing to know how recent it was in our history but then even the last few years anger me as we‘ve made no real progress. There is just a more covert way of continuing the oppression. 3y
Tomigirl44 @Jennifer3 Yes to everything you said! What was so chilling to me is how recent this was in our history as well as blatant crimes with no punishment or consequences. And I‘ve had similar awareness of continuing discrimination especially over the past several years, having thought we‘d made such progress from those days and realizing not so much. 3y
Jennifer3 Yes, so many committed crimes with absolutely no repercussions. I can‘t believe how close Mr. Marshall came to be hanged himself in Tennessee. He wasn‘t a perfect man as none of us our perfect but what an incredibly brave and groundbreaking life he led. 3y

So, I‘m really late to the party on this one. It‘s been on my shelf for years and I finally made time to read it this past weekend. I‘ve read a number of Backman‘s books and enjoyed most of them. This one didn‘t disappoint. I laughed, felt like I truly understood the characters, and could relate with them. I plan on reading everything Backman writes.

This book was published at just the right time. I appreciated the author‘s experience of living through challenging times, or “wintering.” She normalizes the cycles we all experience of having ups and downs of life and encourages us to make peace with them while we live through them.

I didn‘t know until a month or two ago that Tolkien write letters to his children as Santa. What a beautiful collection, with his original script and pictures he drew. I enjoyed reading it in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Andrea4 I was so overjoyed when I found this out too! Such dedication to his kids 😍 3y
Tomigirl44 @Andrea4 Yes - such planning and creativity for his characters, not to mention the amazing colorful and detailed drawings! It was a delight, even reading it on a Kindle (I‘m sure it‘s even better on paper). 3y

A book considering the impact of trauma on children; a difficult but insightful book.

5280reader Our school district is being trained in his work to support all students and adults with regulation strategies and understanding our stress response system. While he presents severe cases of trauma in this book, everyone can benefit learning about the neurosequential model he presents. 3y
Tomigirl44 @5280reader exactly! I was a bit nervous before reading it, thinking it was going to be horribly dark & depressing, but I found it inspiring & hopeful, & it helped me understand why some people are the way they are. It astonished me that until this time psych experts hadn‘t thought about or studied the impact of trauma on children. It‘s such a no-brainer for me. It was required for my doctoral program (on leadership); not sure why but grateful. 3y

I‘m looking forward to reading more by this author.

I loved this book! This man intuited leadership essentials long before people were thinking or talking about leadership. There are movies about Shackleton that are also great. But if you‘re wanting to learn about leadership essentials, you‘ll want to read this book.

A unique book on leadership, looking at how we read and understand others and how we use our leadership to welcome or alienate others. I‘ve read a lot of books about leadership but none like this one, being aware of how one uses their leadership role in whatever context they are in, and being aware of one‘s presence and intent.
