An electric new story of teenage Cruella de Vil in an original novel inspired by the upcoming Walt Disney Studios Live Action Film, Cruella. Swinging London, Summer 1967. Sixteen-year-old Estella, gifted with talent, ingenuity, and ambition, dreams of becoming a renowned fashion designer. But life seems intent on making sure her dreams never come true. Having arrived in London as a young girl, Estella now runs wild through the city streets with Jasper and Horace, amateur thieves who double as Estella's makeshift family and partners-in-(petty)-crime. How can Estella dedicate herself to joining the ranks of the London design elite when she's sewing endless costumes and disguises for the trio's heists? When a chance encounter with Magda and Richard Moresby-Plum, two young scions of high society, vaults Estella into the world of the rich and famous, she begins to wonder whether she might be destined for more after all. Suddenly, Estella's days are filled with glamorous parties, exclusive eateries, flirtations with an up-and-coming rock star, and, of course, the most cutting-edge fashions money can buy. But what is the true cost of keeping up with the fast crowd--and is it a price Estella is willing to pay?

Although the storyline was predictable, I still enjoyed the story of how Cruella came to be. I think the author did a great job of truly understanding the character and what motivates her.

Now I can't wait to watch the movie. I waited until I finished this book before I allowed myself to see it.

I absolutely adored this! Cruella is one of my all-time favorites and I'm so glad she got her own origin story. The joys of London are well described and the tone making the reader imagine themself in this lovely city. I especially loved the time period which demonstrates the start of colorful fashion and upbeat music after the war. This story was exactly what I needed it to be. Maureen Johnson clearly knows how to create Disney magic!

wanderinglynn This is on my TBR! 👍🏻 4y

I was wondering why the names Jasper and Horace were familiar but it's because they are the henchmen! That took some time to make the link.

I got the opportunity to review this and I'm really stocked. Cruella is one of my all-time favorites when it comes to villains and I was planning on seeing the real-life adapted version of this tale. I'm honestly surprised that this is going to be my first book from Maureen Johnson considering, how many of her books are in my TBR.

After seeing the trailer, I‘m going to have to read the prequel (tagged), which comes out in April. Cruella isn‘t my favorite Disney villain, but she‘s up there. And given that there isn‘t really a fantasy aspect to the original movie, it makes her character even more compelling.

tpixie Oh! Thanks for the heads up!! 4y
mom2bugnbee My 15yo ADORES Cruella & is incredibly excited about this! I thought that her laugh (heard in the trailer) was perfect. I didn't know that there was a book - thanks for that! 4y
mommyincolortv Well this begs the question: who is your favorite Disney villain? I'm going to go with Scar from Lion King. Honestly, he was just being horrible because he felt rejected by Mufasa and his perfect family. Ursula from Little Mermaid is my favorite villain lady. Her cackles are the best! 4y

Meaw_catlady This trailer was amazing !!!!! Im excited for it ! 4y
wanderinglynn @mommyincolor it‘s a toss up between Maleficent (she‘s a DRAGON!) and Ursula mainly because I love Pat Carroll‘s voice (who did her voice in the 1991 animated movie). I also love Shere Khan from 1967 animated The Jungle Book also because of George Sanders voice. 4y
wanderinglynn @mom2bugnbee Emma Stone does have her laugh down! 4y
Tera66 I'm so excited for this! 4y
