When Ghosts Come Home
When Ghosts Come Home: A Novel | Wiley Cash
13 posts | 11 read | 11 to read
The eagerly awaited novel from the New York Times bestselling author of A Land More Kind Than Home, a tender and haunting story of a father and daughter, crime and forgiveness, race and memory When the roar of a low-flying plane awakens him in the middle of the night, Sheriff Winston Barnes knows something strange is happening at the nearby airfield on the coast of North Carolina. But nothing can prepare him for what he finds: a large airplane has crash-landed and is now sitting sideways on the runway, and there are no signs of a pilot or cargo. When the body of a local man is discoveredshot dead and lying on the grass near the crash siteWinston begins a murder investigation that will change the course of his life and the fate of the community that he has sworn to protect. Everyone is a suspect, including the dead man. As rumors and accusations fly, long-simmering racial tensions explode overnight, and Winston, whose own tragic past has followed him like a ghost, must do his duty while facing the painful repercussions of old decisions. Winston also knows that his days as sheriff may be numbered. Hes up for re-election against a corrupt and well-connected challenger, and his deputies are choosing sides. As if these events werent troubling enough, he must finally confront his daughter Colleen, who has come home grieving a shattering loss she cannot fully articulate. As the suspense builds and this compelling mystery unfolds, Wiley Cash delves deep into the hearts of these richly drawn, achingly sympathetic characters to reveal the nobility of an ordinary man struggling amidst terrifying, extraordinary circumstances.

This novo examines race, justice, forgiveness, and family in a small North Carolina town in 1984. It follows Sheriff Winston Barnes over a four day period as he investigates a murder and a plane crash that will reveal the tensions in his community. Told from the POVs of Barnes, his daughter Colleen, and Jay, the brother-in-law of the victim. It is a captivating (but slow moving) novel that offers a nuanced look at the South and its sordid history.

Obviously the cover of this book is gorgeous. The novel though was just okay. I thought that it really slogged along. I love strong character development. And I really liked the characters in the novel & I felt like I got to know them really well. It just didn't feel like much was happening. The twist on the last two pages was so incredible & I wish that more of the novel had this urgency. ⭐⭐⭐

This book is Wiley Cash at his best! So incredibly good, even with an ending that hit me like a mack truck. 4.5⭐️

The characters were so well written, there was not a main or supporting character that I did not sympathize with. With lush storytelling thee is so much to draw from. My one fault with this book is the ending, I absolutely hated it, but I am sure that is what Cash wanted us to feel.

My last read of October, which I finished late last night. I love Wiley Cash and this one didn‘t disappoint. I especially appreciate all the details of its setting in Oak Island, North Carolina, a place I know well. The ending really got to me. No spoilers, but I saw where it was going in the final chapter and I think my heart rate went up.

At the Bookmarks Winston Salem book festival. Very safe as all the indoor venues require proof of vaccinations with social distancing and double masking. First venue was with Wiley Cash, Charlie Lovett and Anne Bogel.

Lcsmcat I‘m sorry I missed Cash! 3y

🌺🌴 𝗩𝗮𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 🌴🌺

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗱 made me a devoted fan of 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗵 so I was very excited to get a copy of his new book, 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗚𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲. I'm enjoying it on the lanai, looking up now & then to watch a boat sail by & gaze over at the neighboring islands of Lanai & Moloka'i.

Cash, a thoughtful, articulate writer, immediately drew me into his characters' lives . . . again.⁣

Happy Friday!!!

I‘m looking forward to:

🖤 Having my husband home for the weekend. (He comes home every night, but I like it better when he‘s around all day.)

🖤 Picking up my preordered copy of A Million Things by Emily Spurr.

🖤 Eating as many of my gooey GF chocolate chip cookies as I possibly can.

🖤 Reading this highly anticipated September release!! (Which I probably won‘t get to start this weekend, but I‘m still hoping.)

Susanita Cookies! 🍪🍪🍪 3y
Aims42 I hear ya about the joy of having the hubby around all day during the weekends 😊 And those cookies look so good!!! Enjoy your weekend! 3y

I‘m really excited for this to come out later this year. Wiley Cash is a North Carolina author, and he‘s one of my favorites. I was always going to read whatever he published but I saw him do a virtual talk about this book several months ago that made me want to read it even more. He shared the cover this week.

DGRachel I have one of his books on my shelf, but I haven‘t read it yet. I don‘t even remember the title or why I bought it. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4y
MallenNC @DGRachel I‘ve read all his books, but I have plenty of others that are the same way for me. I know I bought them for some reason! 4y
marleed I read This Dark Road to Mercy in 2020 after the book sat on my physical TBR for a couple years. I really liked it and want to read more of his work. 4y
MallenNC @marleed I‘ve liked all his books. His last one, The Last Ballad, was his best yet for me, so I‘m excited to see how this one is. I am from/live in North Carolina like he is, so I also appreciate that his settings are authentic. 4y
