Should We Stay or Should We Go
Should We Stay or Should We Go | Lionel Shriver
12 posts | 10 read | 12 to read
When her father dies, Kay Wilkinson can't cry. Over ten years, Alzheimer's had steadily eroded this erudite man into a paranoid lunatic. Surely one's own father passing should never come as such a relief. Both medical professionals, Kay and her husband Cyril have seen too many elderly patients in similar states of decay. Although healthy and vital in their early fifties, the couple fears what may lie ahead. Determined to die with dignity, Cyril makes a modest proposal. To spare themselves and their loved ones such a humiliating and protracted decline, they should agree to commit suicide together once they've both turned eighty. When their deal is sealed, the spouses are blithely looking forward to another three decades together. But then they turn eighty.By turns hilarious and touching, playful and grave, Should We Stay or Should We Go portrays twelve parallel universes, each exploring a possible future for Kay and Cyril. Were they to cut life artificially short, what would they miss out on? Something terrific? Or something terrible? Might they end up in a home? A fabulous luxury retirement village, or a Cuckoo's Nest sort of home? Might being demented end up being rather fun? What future for humanity awaits--the end of civilization, or a Valhalla of peace and prosperity? What if cryogenics were really to work? What if scientists finally cure aging? Both timely and timeless, Lionel Shriver addresses serious themes--the compromises of longevity, the challenge of living a long life and still going out in style--with an uncannily light touch. Weaving in a host of contemporary issues, from Brexit and mass migration to the coronavirus, Shriver has pulled off a rollicking page-turner in which we never have to mourn perished characters, because they'll be alive and kicking in the very next chapter.

The dialogue is sharp as a knife, and Kay and Cyril leap from the page, vivid and fully formed. It‘s a novel that asks big questions about what it means to be in control of your life, the dynamics of a marriage, familial duty and love and the toll it takes on our individual lives, the shape and purpose of a society and its role in our individual lives, and most directly about getting older, and how we navigate our own unravelling.

Another bail. But I don‘t feel the click with Shriver anymore, this is the second book by her that loses itself in details that I don‘t care for. Too bad because the premise is very intriguing: a couple decides to commit suicide together when they turn 80 buy when that day approaches will they still want to?

Amiable I find Shriver to be hit or miss. I either love her stuff or I can‘t finish it —there‘s no in between. 13mo

quietlycuriouskate Honestly, I wasn't thrilled with it either. 😕 13mo
BarbaraBB @quietlycuriouskate That is good to know, makes me feel less guilty! 13mo
dabbe @BarbaraBB I know. I say it to remind myself that not every book is for every reader, and there are only so many days to this life to force myself to finish a book I don't like. 13mo
sarahbarnes Sorry you haven‘t found a good read in the last couple of books you‘ve tried. Hopefully soon. ♥️ 13mo
Suet624 So sorry. It was definitely a slog, but the overall effect of the book was great for me 13mo
Simona I have Mandibles on my soon TBR, but know I‘m not so sure 🤔 13mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 Don‘t feel sorry! I was super intrigued by the premise. It just didn‘t work for me. She writes so many details about money, and finance. Just like in The Mandibles and my mind starts wandering when she does! 13mo
BarbaraBB @Simona You should definitely try, but it‘s a slog too imo, just like this one. 13mo

#WeeklyForecast 42/23

I hope to finally read this book, that‘s been on my forecast for weeks now. Fact is, that I‘ve read nothing during the past week. I am super distracted and worried and sad by what happened in Israel and what‘ll happen next. My escape has been binging a Dutch series. I hope I‘ll be able to read next week.

It is weird to tag you Cindy, in a bookish post while you world has changed completely. Thinking of you 🤍

#WeeklyForecast 40/23

I am reading the Japanese book solely for its cover 😍 and it is kind of fun. Next will be the Shriver, which I remember @Suet624 loved, and maybe another #Booker23 one, even though it didn‘t make the shortlist.

squirrelbrain That is a great cover! ❤️ 14mo
Suet624 Did I love it? I found it intriguing and I still think of it quite often but it was super unsettling too. Which is to say it was like so many of her books. 14mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 I should have said that it made an impression on you that made me want to read it ever since. 14mo

Suet624 Ah! I wasn‘t trying to be picky or anything. I just couldn‘t actually remember what I said. (In the midst of bronchitis and coughing up a lung and not sleeping so a bit muddled) Good luck with it! It‘s a doozy. 14mo
Cinfhen I LOVE LS but her last few books were all #MoreMehThanYeah for me so I‘ll be waiting to hear your thoughts on this one! And I do LOVE the cover of the Japanese novel. #FallVibes 14mo
Cinfhen The cover for Spell is pretty awesome too 🧡 14mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 I know you weren‘t 🩷 14mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I was underwhelmed by The Mandibles but have high hopes for this one as I‘ve loved all other books I‘ve read by her! 14mo
Megabooks I enjoyed void! Hadn‘t read anything like it. Interesting premise! 14mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I didn‘t know you already read it. Will check out your review. I am enjoying the book! 14mo

Interesting premise, but oh so dreary! Kay & Cyril make a pact to commit suicide when she turns 80.Cyril doesn‘t want to be a drain on society and Kay wants to avoid the devastating effects of dementia. Shrivel provides a number of scenarios in which one or both “stays or goes” at Kay‘s birthday. I spent most of the book disliking the couple and found the details of each death and life tiresome. It might be a good book to discuss, but ugh. 2⭐️s

My fiction reads were merely okay in April. The tagged book won, but was no match for “Lessons in Chemistry.” Which in turn was taken out by “The Latecomer” —which now moves seamlessly into the quarterfinal slot.

Kay and Cyrus make a pact in their 50s to end their lives at 80 so as to avoid the various financial, physical and emotional issues of old age. But then their 80th birthdays arrive. That‘s when this becomes a “choose your own death adventure” book. Each chapter depicts a different future depending on whether they do it or not. Shriver is a provocative writer—I don‘t always understand the point she‘s making, but I enjoy the intellectual challenge.

BarbaraBB Great review. Eager to read this one. 2y
Amiable @BarbaraBB Some of the scenarios were a bit far-fetched, but overall the book really does make you think about what the future may hold for us all as we age. It's not a pretty picture, either. 😬 2y

These two books both take different paths for a large choice in life. Should we stay is done well and pretty funny. I‘m worn out by Rose Napolitano by the end of her life story.

Shriver is so imaginative that she held my attention during a sometimes bleak view of future alternative realities for a couple who have committed to ending their lives at 80. Each chapter offers a different possibility if they choose to stay alive. This book was not an easy read for me because the subject matter required that I think of my own future. I felt a bit squirmy. However, I really appreciate Shriver tackling the subject of aging.

BarbaraBB Another one of your reviews that makes me want to stack immediately (edited) 3y

Suet624 @BarbaraBB I‘m curious what you would think of it. It was a slow read but I think everything written by her is a slow read. 🥴 3y

Maybe not the best book to read on the eve of a birthday, but I have always appreciated Shriver‘s thought process and writing. A couple decided years ago that 80 years of age would be the best time to die. Life after that age just involves pain and suffering. As the time approaches they revisit their choice. Loved the first chapter. Onward! (Photo from Shelburne Falls, MA)

Reggie Happy Birthday!!! Have you ever seen Midsommar? It‘s about a cult and their age is 75. And then they take a walk over a cliff. This sounds interesting. 3y
Suet624 @Reggie Have you ever read any Shriver? She can be a bit in the weeds, but I loved So Much for That and We Need to Talk About Kevin. I haven't heard of Midsommar, but to be honest I am leaning more toward that approach. The slow descent is not something I'm interested in. 3y

I was intrigued by the premise of this book: after witnessing the havoc that Alzheimer‘s disease has on the lives of the elderly, two adults make a pack to enact agency over their lives and decide the day they leave this Earth. Something dragged about this book and I decided life was too short (apropos given the plot) to stick with a book that isn‘t speaking to me.
