Reminiscent of her captivating, scandalous Mama Ruby series, New York Times bestselling author Mary Monroe crafts a story set in the Deep South during the Depression, in this tale of a woman determined to have a respectable lifeno matter what it costs to keep it . . . The daughter of a prostitute mother and an alcoholic father, Maggie Franklin knew her only way out was to marry someone upstanding and church-going. Someone like Hubert Wiggins, the most eligible man in Lexington, Alabamaand the son of its most revered preacher. Proper and prosperous, Hubert is glad to finally have a wife, even one with Maggies background. For Hubert has a secret he desperately needs to stay hidden. And Maggies unexpected charm, elegance, and religious devotion makes her the perfect partner in lies . . . Their surprising union makes the Wiggins the towns most envied couplecomplete with a son, Claude, whom Maggie idolizes. Until he falls in love with the worst possible fiance. Terrified, Maggie wont let Daisy destroy her son. And when her employers brother sexually harasses her, Maggie knows something needs to be done about him as well. In fact, she realizes there are an awful lot of sinning disruptive people who should be eliminated from her perfect world . . . But the more Maggie tries to take control, the more obstacles are thrown in her way. And when it seems like the one person she always expected to be there is starting to drift away, Maggie will play one final, merciless game to secure what shes fought so hard to earn . . .

4.5⭐

I had never heard of Mary Monroe and someone said she was one of their favorite writers. I looked and my local library had this book, which takes place beginning in 1917 and goes thru 1930's. It's a historical novel with a little bit of psychological thriller in it.

We first meet the two main MC's, Maggie Franklin and Hubert Wiggins, on their Wedding Day. This follows their married life through the Deep South until the 1930's. ⬇️

MonicaLoves2Read During this time we witness the racism, sexual violence and hard life they go through. They both have secrets and one of their secrets is worse than the others.

I have to say that Mary Monroe is a great story teller. Mrs. Wiggins is a hard story to read, though I think it should be read by all. Monroe didn't hold anything back. She is a very vivid writer. This book was fast paced to me. I will be reading more by Monroe.

Gumbo, Gossip, Lies, and Deceit! Mrs. Wiggins is full of it. I had a lot of fun with this book. The restrictions of time and location really made for a creative web of lies and kept me interested. I could easily see this being a Tyler Perry production if it were a film adaptation.

“I seen how close your old shoe been sticking to you ever since y‘all walked in.”

I couldn‘t help but laugh at this. 🤭

I wonder if people still use this expression when referring to someone‘s partner. 🤔

Reading while running errands is my new thing to do. Every chance I get I‘ll read a few pages…while waiting in line, when hubby runs in the hardware store, sitting in traffic or waiting on meds. If there‘s a minute, best believe I‘ll be reading. #illreadanywhere #wheredoyouliketoread #kindlepaperwhite #mrswiggins

I‘ve always enjoyed Mary Monroe‘s books! This is the first one that I‘ve read in a long time. She didn‘t let me down! This book was interesting from the start, storyline unlike any I‘ve read before. Then…it really got good! LOL A mother‘s love will have you doing things out of character! Maggie was far beyond a helicopter mom!
