When sixteen horse heads are found mysteriously buried in a small seaside town, residents are reeling and desperate for answers in Greg Buchanan's mystery Sixteen Horses. In Ilmarsh, England, sixteen horse heads are found buried on a farm near the sea. After Veterinary Forensics expert Cooper Allen travels to the scene to examine them, a pathogen is discovered lurking within the fallen animals, and many of those who have come into contact with the corpses grow critically ill. The dying seaside community goes into quarantine and paranoia grows throughout the town, with numerous farms culled. The suspect remains at large and Alec Nichols, the policeman who first uncovered the heads, is desperate to get to the truth behind the mysterious crime. In a town as small as Ilmarsh nearly anybody could be a suspect but with a crime as insidious and troubling as this one, Alec is dead-set on leaving no stone unturned even if it brings him to his own front door.

I don‘t know what to make of this book. The atmosphere and sense of foreboding that Buchanan creates is spectacular. The creepy English seaside town rocked by a gruesome discovery is a perfect setting. However, the story is disjointed at times, and I was left a bit disappointed with the resolution. This is a story that won‘t leave me for awhile. A deeply unsettling debut, Buchanan is one to watch. 4⭐️TW: graphic descriptions of animal abuse

Utterly gripping says The Guardian, not so much say I. I really struggle when I don‘t like any of the characters in a book, you don‘t root for them and you don‘t care what happens to them. Set to the backdrop of a small rundown seaside town, this book is bleak! Slowly it winds its way to a conclusion with so many characters who are never really developed, that when the killer is finally revealed it all feels a bit flat. 2/5 stars for me.

In an English town, sixteen horse heads in a farm. The Veterinary investigator finds out that a pathogen is in the soil that is making people sick. A series of crimes start happening and sets the town in a panic. Everything is not what it seems and everyone is a suspect.
The story has many points of view that can get a little confusing especially with the chapters ending in middle sentence. It still has a unique plot with unique characters.

FelinesAndFelonies I agree. 🙌🏽 3y

This should have been a mesmerizing tale. The narrative style left me confused. There were many unidentified voices sharing perspectives. The short sentences created a sense of foreboding but did little for clarity. Honestly, I kept reading not to figure out who did it, but to figure out what the hell was going on. The characters were very flat & I struggled to figure out the motives behind each character & their connection to the whole. ⭐⭐⭐

FelinesAndFelonies ⚠️TRIGGER WARNINGS:⚠️ Animal abuse, child abuse, neglect, graphic descriptions of violence 3y

#NetGalley #ARC #Audiobook

Decent thriller with an interesting premise, but when I reached the middle of the book things became a bit confusing. This might have more to do with it being an audiobook and the writing style just not translating well to narration.

If you're an animal lover you might want to avoid this one since there are some detailed scenes with murdered horses.

I loved the performance of this audiobook-but I wished for a physical copy more than once… Set in a seaside village on the decline, the book opens with the heads of the titular 16 horses & pairs together a local detective with a forensics veterinarian to solve this brutal crime. The style choices unfortunately don‘t translate well to audio with chapters ending mid-sentence. The plot eventually comes together & if there‘s a sequel, I would read it!

TorieStorieS #AudioColoring- but a repeat since I mostly #AudioCleaned to this one!🤣 3y

The basic premise sounded absolutely fascinating, and it started out great, but then it just seemed to take a strange and confusing turn. The narrative seemed to become fragmented about half way through, and at times I became perplexed about what was happening. There were also things that seemed unresolved or unexplained. I did like the main characters as well as the mystery surrounding the main events of the novel.
