Depressing but good.

I really enjoyed this. It started a little slowly but then it got me. I liked it better than the Plot - possibly because I was more interested in the characters.

Amazing. Adventure, setting-do, revolution, giant aliens, powers from both humans & aliens that I cannot explain & a very twisty at the end.

It‘s hard to believe that a poet who was well known enough that her suicide inspired other suicides could be as forgotten as Nora May French. I wonder who else we‘ve forgotten? This book takes a close look at French, the Sterlings & the luminaries in their circle. It was enjoyable, worth reading but I felt more unsettled than satisfied by it.

I admit that the only truffles I‘ve ever eaten have been chocolate but this book is so engaging that you come to feel that you understand the truffle obsession. And the dogs: love them - the bonus at the end was the best.

A collection of essays by Susan Orlean featuring animals. All are good but I believe my favorites are the ones about her own animals well and the donkeys of Fez . . . Or about the Cuban oxen.

This was quite the ride. I believe I started this book under a misapprehension: I thought it was a mystery for some reason- but definitely not! It was suspenseful & drew me in & even though it was more horror than I am drawn to typically I really enjoyed it.

Really good - if frustrating. Reading all the ways in which the various personalities meshed or didn‘t mesh makes you wonder how anything got done at all. And the denigration of Franklin and her work is infuriating. (Not by the author but by her colleagues.)

A fast, fun, feminist retelling of Sleeping Beauty - illustrated w/versions of the Arthur Rackham illustrations. A TOR novella - but definitely find a hard copy so you can enjoy the illustrations too.

I loved this book. Aliens, music, luthiers, the devil, doughnuts. It was unexpected & lovely.

Really enjoyed this one. Set in Chicago, old serial killer, internet crime solvers & a Chicago police detective from an old CPD family. Apparently just what I wanted to read & about 180 degrees from the book I read just before it.

Good - but really detailed & I have to say things worked weirdly back in 1692. Obviously, the legal system was not our legal system but somehow I expected it to seem closer. One odd fact: one of the accused was John Alden Jr from Plymouth. Turns out he was the son of John Alden & Priscilla Mullins of “Speak for yourself, John Alden” fame.

What an amazing story!
The author is a pioneer in studying forest canopies & the Arbornaut gives us a very personal look at her journey, her struggles & triumphs both in her personal life & mostly in her professional life. Plus, I learned so many new things about plants & all the fauna that make a living on or in them.

Really enjoyed her clear & down to earth interpretation of the cards. Made some that have always seemed vague to me much clearer (like Temperance & the Star). Will be looking for a copy of my own.

Fascinating: the book describes a way to set up your pasture to better recreate the type of life a horse has in the wild. I heard an interview about this concept on the podcast Stall and Stable & it really made sense to me. Loved reading the examples from nature & the stories of people who had made the changes.

Wow. This is a memoir that reads like suspense. Recommended by a friend - thank you! it is intense, the story of the life of a woman who grows up as a fugitive.

I wasn‘t sure what I was getting into with this book. It is a version of a type of book about an elite boarding school. It is suspenseful & horrifying & I loved how the author used Classical Mythology to illuminate the narrative.

A family saga - some weird magic- interesting characters. I have trouble verbalizing about this novel. The family is full of interesting people & odd secrets. It drew me in & had kept me going to its very satisfying conclusion.

Really fascinating: Alaskan Brown Bears & humans.

I don‘t know how I missed this two years ago but here is the story of Clara Parkes journey through the yarn making world with the Great Bale. If you are a knitter, spinner or have any interest in the processes that take wool from sheep to skein this is an a very enjoyable look at that trail.

I have had a fairly trouble free menopause so until the breast cancer I hadn‘t sought out information on the process. This book taught me & I think is a good reference for the way your body changes in nutrition needs as you age.

Pretty creepy & atmospheric. A lot of death in a dying town. I enjoyed & was creeped out by it.

Enjoyable fairy tale of being a long lost princess in the 21st century. Light & fun.

This book wasn‘t at all what I thought it was going to be: it was so much better. I was attracted by the title & a quick glance at the synopsis made me think it was going to be some sort of suspense thriller but it is more a mythological, fairy talesque thriller. Really enjoyable.

Thought this might make an interesting book pairing. The second book is Elijah Pierce‘s America.

I am really enjoying this book. Symbiosis & Escaping Exodus are space dramas about populations of former Earth humans living in the bodies of giant space creatures. The culture is fascinating & the setting is just deeply weird.

This book was intense & very good. Still a little bit stressed from it! Shortly after the author started working as a reporter she witnessed an execution. That would have been disturbing enough but this one was bitched & then she started hearing that the man may have been innocent. The book is the story of her search to find the truth if the crime.

I thoroughly enjoyed Unnatural Magic: a mystery & adventure set in a place with magic & where there are humans, trolls & fairies. Not too much with the fairies in this book: perhaps Waggoner will explore their culture in other books? Kind of a 19th centuryesque world where magic is studied at university, human women live a life full of restrictions but troll women have power & responsibility. Really fast paced & fun.

Science fiction, feminism, dying earth- excellent space adventure about an all female attempt at finding a new home for humanity.

Very enjoyable mystery - set in the world of comics with engaging characters & a fast pace.

You had to know that Sarah Gailey would have an interesting take on domestic suspense & oh yeah. And it is a satisfying quick read with a serious message besides.

The second book in the Blood of Stars Duo - very satisfying as Maia tries to save her country & her soul.

I loved reading President Obama‘s memories & thoughts on his campaign & his first term. He writes very much the way he speaks: if he narrates the audiobook, I bet it is a real pleasure - except that I have a personal difficulty in listening to such a long book even though I read a longer book with no difficulty. It will be interesting to read his thoughts on the second term.

I really enjoyed this one: particularly the depictions of the main character & her rather odd children. I started imagining other mothers of mythical creatures & their unusual children: picture Pasaphiae (sp?). & the tiny half baby half calf Minotaur. I am somewhat familiar with Norse mythology but not enough to know this story & it was very satisfying.

Also finished. Also stunning but in a different way. Had a bit of trouble wrapping my brain around it at first & then it really drew me in. This is completely my brain‘s fault & not the book‘s.

Just finished. Feeling a bit stunned. So good.
