The Ninth Metal
The Ninth Metal | Benjamin Percy
7 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
From award-winning author Benjamin Percy comes an explosive, breakout speculative thriller in which a powerful new metal arrives on Earth in the wake of a meteor shower, triggering a massive new "gold rush" in the Midwest and turning life as we know it on its head. The first of a cycle of novels set in a shared universe.

Panpan

Meteors full of omnimetal (somehow both potent energy source & potent drug) sprinkle northern MN.💥Many directions to explore—rare resources, exploitation, family drama, military dominance, corporate greed—but ends up with stock characters in increasingly outrageous situations. Too many twists. P48 “It‘s like the gold rush meets the oil rush meets the height of the steel boom in the Iron Range. It‘s f*ing bananas.” Plot is bananas, too. 🍌🍌🍌2021

By the end of this book I was so hooked I lost track of time & forgot to make dinner. The debris trail from a passing comet has spiked northern Minnesota with a mysterious, powerful & very valuable new element, omnimetal. The battle for mining rights leads to bloodshed, while a military facility conducts terrible experiments. Prodigal son John Frontier returns home to a changed landscape, where corruption, a cult, & his family's secrets converge.

It might seriously start to lose it two thirds in, and the ending feels seriously rushed...but it's still one of the most enjoyable books I've read in ages. Fantastic characters.

Giving this one a try next. Not too sure about it yet, but the author can clearly write his ass off...

Heard about this book via a review from Stephen King‘s Twitter. An interesting science fiction concept in an almost apocalyptic setting. The characters were interesting and the subject kept me interested. Overall I enjoyed the book. This is the first book in the author‘s series and I‘ll read the others now too.
