The famous detective plays a smaller role in this book, as it is entirely narrated in someone else's PoV, and so Kosuke Kindaichi has behind the scenes info the reader isn't privy to. Which is cheating! But it was a wild ride. I suspected EVERYONE! And my main suspect was, of course, innocent 😅

Tatsuyada, whose mother died when he was 7 and who was brought up by his stepfather, discovers that he is a member of a rich family. Now he's been called to claim his rightful position as the heir.

Secret passages, a hidden treasure, and a family curse all have a part to play in this intriguing mystery. I don't know if the change in tone is because of the change to 1st person POV, differences in the Japanese style, or the different translator.

This may be my favorite Kosuke Kindaichi yet. In this outing, a young man learns he is the long-lost heir of a wealthy family that‘s been is disarray ever since the man‘s father, as he learns, went on a murderous rampage. What should be a joyful return home to his family quickly becomes a nightmare as people start dying. Love the twists & turns in these mysteries, the setting, characters, & tension. Another entertaining read.

Starting a new Kosuke Kindaichi murder mystery tonight… Yokomizo‘s plots are always complex, always interesting and the atmosphere is always creepy with a healthy dose of tension and danger. I‘m anticipating another great story.

2. One of the best traits of the main character, a famous detective named Kosuke Kindaichi, is his quiet persistence. He comes off as unassuming and, perhaps, not altogether present but he always solves the case.

I enjoyed this classic Japanese murder mystery. It‘s set in a remote mountainous village with legends of buried treasure and family curses. This was a perfectly spooky book to read in October! Thanks for sending it to me, Jamie!! 👻 🍵 #LitsyLove

Were it not for the events that I am about to relate, doubtless my life would have continued in that impoverished, humdrum vein. But one day a spot of red was suddenly spilt on the grey of my life: I embarked on an adventure of dazzling mystery and stepped into a world of blood-chilling terror.

This was really good! I predicted a couple of things (never tell someone in a mystery novel to come see you tomorrow for important information… that‘s signing your death warrant) but was surprised by most of the twists and turns.
