Really good graphic memoir. One of my favorites from last year. Margaret Kimball tries to learn more about the thread of mental illness that runs through her family. The book opens with her mother‘s attempted suicide (on Mother‘s Day!) when Margaret was only four years old. She also writes about the difficult years of her parents‘ divorce and subsequent custody battle.

The love and deep emotion Margaret has for her family is evident through the lovely illustrations featuring the settings where the events took place. Highly recommended 🌟
The boys have been in a routine to watch a movie with popcorn nearly every night. So I read a bit with popcorn and mini chocolate chips (a must with popcorn!) each night. It‘s cozy ☺️ Started this graphic novel last night while they watched Paddington on Netflix.

I love a good graphic memoir. Still digesting this one. While I enjoyed her writing, I‘m not sure I agree with the family‘s approach to mental illness. There‘s no perfect way and a family can only do so much. Still.

She begins with her mother‘s suicide attempt when Margaret was four and ends with an interview of her schizophrenic brother. There is more writing than most graphic memoirs, and the art is straightforward yet detailed, as if her own organization can bleed into making sense of her family. Very powerful!
