Small Joys of Real Life

The night Eva shared a smile with Pat, something started. Two weeks later, lying together in her bed, Pat said, 'You can't live your life saying you'll get around to doing something you know will make you happy. You just have to do it.' Eva didn't know how devastating those words would turn out to be. Pat dies and the aftershock leaves Eva on unsteady ground. She is pregnant. And she has to make a choice. Suddenly, the world that she at times already questioned, her career, her roommates and friends, and life in the inner-city are all even harder to navigate. Her best friends, Sarah and Annie, are also dealing with the shifts and changes of their late twenties, and each of them will at times let the others down. Small Joys of Real Life is a poignant and unpredictable novel from an exciting new literary talent about how the life you have can change in an instant. It's about friendship, desire, loss and growing up to accept that all you can do is be in the moment and look to find the joys in between.

Pickpick

Over the course of a few weeks, 20somethings Eva & Pat meet at parties & sleep together. Then Pat suicides & Eva realises she is pregnant. No spoilers, this all happens in the first 20 pages. There follows the kind of story Sally Rooney might write if she lived in Melbourne as Eva & her friends adjust to the pregnancy & the changes in their lives. The story is explicitly set in the area I live in - I loved all the local references.

Centique This sounds really good! Hope you guys are doing okay. I‘m always reading the Melbourne news and hoping for improvement 🤞🤞 3y
CarolynM @Centique Thanks Paula, we're OK. Hoping it doesn't go on too much longer😬 But even if we squash it again here if things don't change in NSW we'll be back in lockdown before very long😡 3y

Cinfhen This does sound fun and I love the local connection for you 💕💕Definitely thinking of your current situation 😞I fear Israel is about to announce a full lockdown but things have gotten really bad there😢😫 3y
LeeRHarry This sounds good 😊 happy to hear you‘re hanging in there with the lockdown - we have had two exposure site scares at work today so things got a little bit too close to home 😳 I agree the NSW government needs to get their act together 😡 3y
CarolynM @LeeRHarry We have all been able to stay close to home and luckily there are no exposure sites near us. Hope it stays that way. How are you coping? 3y
LeeRHarry @CarolynM not too bad thanks - had planned on going to NT - rescheduled trip from June - in just over a week - it‘ll take a minor miracle for that to happen now 😔 it really isn‘t worth planning anything. Bring on 2022! 3y
CarolynM @Cinfhen Thanks Cindy, we are ok. I won't bore you with the details of the ongoing interstate feud that's got us here. It's so frustrating😡 I'm sorry to hear things are so bad in Israel. There must be better times ahead for all of us💕 3y
CarolynM @LeeRHarry Oh, that's disappointing. We were supposed to have gone to Uluru in July but that was scuppered by Jetstar changing our direct flight booking to flights via Sydney which they then cancelled when the Sydney outbreak kicked off😡😡😡 We haven't rescheduled, I think we'll just try to grab the first opportunity that comes along once this lockdown is over. Planning anything is only asking to be disappointed these days😞 3y
Cinfhen Thanks 😊 I agree, praying for better days for all xx 3y
Jeg Sitting over here in Perth with fingers crossed.🤞🤞🤞 3y
