Both/And: A Life in Many Worlds | Huma Abedin
7 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
In this beautifully written and propulsive memoir, Huma AbedinHillary Clintons famously private top aide and longtime advisoremerges from the wings of American political history to take command of her own story. The daughter of Indian and Pakistani intellectuals and advocates, Abedin grew up in the United States and Saudi Arabia and traveled widely. Both/And grapples with family, legacy, identity, faith, marriage, motherhoodand workwith wisdom, sophistication, and clarity. Abedin launched full steam into a college internship in the office of the First Lady in 1996, never imagining that her work at the White House would blossom into a career in public service, nor that her career would become an all-consuming way of life. She thrived in rooms with diplomats and sovereigns, entrepreneurs and artists, philanthropists and activists, and witnessed many crucial moments in 21st-century American historyCamp David for urgent efforts at Middle East peace in the waning months of the Clinton administration, Ground Zero in the days after the 9/11 attacks, the inauguration of the first African American president of the United States, the convention floor when America nominated its first female presidential candidate. Abedins relationship with Hillary Clinton has seen both women through extraordinary personal and professional highs, as well as unimaginable lows. Here, for the first time, is a deeply personal account of Clinton as mentor, confidante, and role model. Abedin cuts through caricature, rumor, and misinformation to reveal a crystal clear portrait of Clinton as a brilliant and caring leader, a steadfast friend, generous, funny, hardworking, and dedicated. Both/And is a candid and heartbreaking chronicle of Abedins marriage to Anthony Weiner, what drew her to him, how much she wanted to believe in him, the devastation wrought by his betrayalsand their shared love for their son. It is also a timeless story of a young woman with aspirations and ideals coming into her own in high-pressure jobs and a testament to the potential for women in leadership to blaze a path forward while supporting those who follow in their footsteps. Abedins journey through the opportunities and obstacles, the trials and triumphs, of a full and complex life is a testament to her profound belief that in an increasingly either/or world, she can be both/and. Abedins compassion and courage, her resilience and grace, her work ethic and mission are an inspiration to people of all ages.

This book is Huma‘s story about working with Hillary Clinton for many years, throughout Bill‘s presidency and Hillary‘s presidential campaign. It‘s also about her life with her (ex) husband, Anthony Weiner, who was caught in many sexting scandals.

Huma writes engagingly and honestly and I found the political side just as interesting as her early family life - a fascinating book!

Excited to finally start this.

Sophronisba Curious what you think of it! I'm been thinking about it but haven't pulled the trigger yet. 2y
she.hearts.horror It‘s a fascinating read. I really like the ways it‘s organized - each chapter has a really relevant quote that articulated her values + their origins. I really liked learning about her parents + unique childhood. Her job history is a new perspective about Clinton era — which is always fascinating because everyone has their own opinion and why. Hearing a woman talk about working for a very powerful woman isn‘t a typical read. It‘s slow paced. 2y

Wow! What a remarkable writer Abedin is! Her family legacy and beautiful optimism and willingness to forgive read like an amazing, complicated novel. It was astonishing to keep reminding myself that Both/And is the story of her life and not fabricated. I highly recommend this book and hope we see more out of her!

I did not know what to expect from this book, but it was selling well and thought I should check it out. I am so glad I did as it was a fabulous read. Abedin lets us into her life as she worked up close and personal with Hillary Clinton throughout her years as First Lady, Senator, presidential candidate (twice) and Secretary of State. She also chronicles her marriage to Anthony Weiner who was caught in a sexting scandal. I gave it 5/5 stars.

I couldn‘t put this down. It was engaging & beautifully written. There are many points in this book. Geographic. Faith. Infidelity. Community. The legacies our ancestors give us & the expectations too. The public versus the private. Huma Abedin worked with Hilary Clinton closely from the days she was First Lady & while many of those stories are interesting, what I loved was her childhood stories & her love of family & country. 4.5/5
