The Dressmakers of Auschwitz
The Dressmakers of Auschwitz: The True Story of the Women Who Sewed to Survive | Lucy Adlington
7 posts | 10 read | 9 to read
A powerful chronicle of the women who used their sewing skills to survive the Holocaust, stitching beautiful clothes at an extraordinary fashion workshop created within one of the most notorious WWII death camps. At the height of the Holocaust twenty-five young inmates of the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration campmainly Jewish women and girlswere selected to design, cut, and sew beautiful fashions for elite Nazi women in a dedicated salon. It was work that they hoped would spare them from the gas chambers. This fashion workshopcalled the Upper Tailoring Studiowas established by Hedwig Hss, the camp commandants wife, and patronized by the wives of SS guards and officers. Here, the dressmakers produced high-quality garments for SS social functions in Auschwitz, and for ladies from Nazi Berlins upper crust. Drawing on diverse sourcesincluding interviews with the last surviving seamstressThe Dressmakers of Auschwitz follows the fates of these brave women. Their bonds of family and friendship not only helped them endure persecution, but also to play their part in camp resistance. Weaving the dressmakers remarkable experiences within the context of Nazi policies for plunder and exploitation, historian Lucy Adlington exposes the greed, cruelty, and hypocrisy of the Third Reich and offers a fresh look at a little-known chapter of World War II and the Holocaust.

The Holocaust should be read about and retold all the time, so we never forget what happens when one evil person gets control. I never even heard of these women before I saw a post about it on here. I listened to the Audiobook read by the author.

I consider myself someone who has read/studied more than the average American about the concentration camps of WW2, and yet I'd never come across mention of a salon of couture dressmakers in Auschwitz, with clients among the SS wives and female camp guards.

Highly recommend, although prepare yourself for some harrowing views into human depravity. I listened to the audiobook which is read by the author.

A small group of Jewish women survived the Holocaust because they were coerced into sewing clothing for the SS at Auschwitz. One of those survivors, Bracha Kohut, shared her story with the author. These women couldn‘t have imagined that sewing would one day save their lives. An incredible story of survival; highly recommended.

Shown: the author with Bracha.
