The Devil's Prayer
The Devil's Prayer | Luke Gracias
11 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
A nun commits suicide in front of thousands in Spain. In Australia, Siobhan Russo recognises that nun as her mother, Denise Russo, who disappeared six years ago. In search of answers, Siobhan travels to the isolated convent where her mother once lived. Here she discovers Denise’s final confession, a book that details a heinous betrayal that left her crippled and mute, and Denise’s subsequent deal with the Devil to take revenge. In the desperate bargain Denise made with the Prince of Darkness, she wagered Siobhan’s soul. As Siobhan discovers the fate of her soul, she learns that hidden within the pages of her mother’s confession is part of The Devil’s Prayer, an ancient text with the power to unleash apocalyptic horrors. And now her mother’s enemies know Siobhan has it. Can Siobhan escape an order of extremist monks determined to get the Prayer back? Can she save the world from its own destruction? ScrappyMags I didn't care for this book and had a good rant the other day about these "5 star review" books. How they can be so wildly popular on GR but then the Litsians aren't so crazy about it.... sketch! Good review!! 7y
TheSloanRanger @ScrappyMags Absolutely - there seems to have been quite a few books recently that I have the same issue with. With this one, it was so strong in places but just so off in others, and unfortunately it was the negative stuff that stuck with me more! 7y
ScrappyMags @picklebacksandpaperbacks yeah I was mostly feeling it and it freaked me out (in a good way) with the whole devil/sister thing ... and revenge is pretty awesome lol but things like hooking up 2 days after your ex rapes you in his house? Uh.... 😳😳 7y

TheSloanRanger @ScrappyMags All the sexual violence felt so unnecessary, like the writer was just trying to make it as bad as possible for her. But he didn't cover the violation or the shame or even the emotional side of it. It literally felt like "What's the worst thing I can do to a woman? I know. Three rapes." And then it was like "Okay how can I empower a woman? Have her take control during a rape." It was awful. 7y
TheSloanRanger @ScrappyMags And Siobhan needs some major development. She's just such a nothing character - following Jess and having her make the journey would have been incredible. To know who you are and to be put in a position to have to stop yourself or risk your sister's soul? Like DAAAAMN. I think I feel my own novel coming on. 7y
ScrappyMags Do it!!i totally agree it was so scattered and this horrid violent act but things didn't make sense.. the police would test every guys DNA that were the last ones seen with her (the party) and BAM... case closed. That would be cool to see Jess. What if you found out your father was Satan? Oooh.... 7y

The historical research did go some way to winning me over in the end, but there's still a lot I didn't like. A shame, since I had high hopes! I'll hopefully get a review up on the blog tomorrow!

Ok Has anyone else noticed on Goodreads that ebooks often get these crazy high reviews and you read the book and think WTF?? I'm calling BS. Plus how all the reviews are basically just summary/synopsis with little actual REVIEW?? All it's doing is making me never want to read straight to publish ebooks. 😡😡https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1811625272

Lauren_reading So many are like this. 500 5 star reviews - I read it and think - what!?!?! 7y
ScrappyMags @LaurenReads right and then I come on here and find ppl with the same complaints I had! 7y
ReadingOver50 I am pretty stingy with my 5 star reviews. The book has to be really outstanding for me to give it one. I see a lot of people giving 5 stars to almost everything and it makes me not trust their judgement. 7y

Gezemice I think some of those are scams. Stay away from a book with only five star reviews that mostly seem like a synopsis. 7y
ScrappyMags @Gezemice that's my thinking too!! @ReadingOver50 me too!!! I almost wonder if there's a network of e-authors who conspire. Lol or I have wayyyy to much time for theories 😂😂 7y
WhatDeeReads I don't read books unless they are recommended to me by someone I trust or written by an author that I already know. 7y
ThatBookishGal I have the opposite problem with reviews on goodreads or Amazon. I found the book to be fantastic, but majority of the reviews make it out to be the worst thing ever written. It seriously confuses me taste in books and sense of judgement! 7y
NerdyRev As an aside, when I wrote my self published book, I would joke whenever I shilled it- "5 star rated on Amazon!" then I would state, it was one rating and it was my mom ;-) 7y
NerdyRev I do think people rate higher if they got a galley out of excitement for getting it. Many times I would read their glowing review and see they got a galley of it. Maybe the thought is the publisher will give more books or use it as promo? 7y
ScrappyMags @NerdyRev that's my thinking too!! See your honesty (and humor) would pay off for me as a reader because I'd read your book! 7y
ScrappyMags @ThatBookishGal I sometimes have that problem! If i really love a book a ton of others hated I try to friend the others who loved it and then rummage their shelves. 7y
ScrappyMags @Lucky_Ladee see I should stick to that. None of my GR friends had reviewed it. 7y
ThatBookishGal Hey that isn't a bad idea!!! 7y
MyNamesParadise What annoys me is the books that lead the choice awards on Goodreads are the most popular, not actually the best of 2016 🙄 7y
ScrappyMags @MyNamesParadise definitely true! 7y
LauraJ Yup, this sucked big time! 7y
ScrappyMags @MyNamesParadise something I noticed today... GReads seems to have a LOT of young readers which I think is great but I often don't share the same perspective on books as the younger crowd. 7y

In response to @MrBook and his post earlier, here is where I am at. I challenged myself to a book per week. I plan to slowly increase it each year. :3 Litsy is the best thing ever, and I am so glad to have found it. You guys can add me on Goodreads if you wish: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/5127653-e-m-jenkinson

Mehso-so

My reading buddy! Okay, that aside I finally finished The Devil's Prayer. I give it between a two and a three. There are a lot of inconsistencies coupled with errors that make it a difficult read, but that aside it is fairly entertaining. Graphic content earns it a trigger warning. It is a horror story and deals with the occult. Thanks NetGalley for a copy to review.

ScrappyMags I'm just finishing it but struggling with review... its kinda "clunky" and awkward. I haven't had good luck with straight-to-ereader books 7y
athorne @ScrappyMags I felt the same way. I've been hit or miss with the ones I've been getting. The ones published by DarkFuse have been 50/50. 7y

It's taking a bit to get into, but the diary like entries are written way better than the third person portions.

TheSloanRanger Absolutely agree. And I also think following Jess rather than Siobhan would have been way more interesting. 7y
athorne I agree with that, too. 7y

I decided to take a look at other reviews earlier before laying down to read myself to sleep. So far, I can't help but wonder if I'm reading the same book all the other reviewers read. Oh well, time to trudge onward!

I've hit about 20% of the way through. The concept is great, but it's like I'm reading a rough draft. Finishing will be a challenge.

The writing is so clunky I barely made it through 10% of the book.

ScrappyMags Too funny I just used the same word. I'm telling you they are "padding" these ereader books on Goodreads because it has a 4+ on there and the Litsians arent feeling it 7y
