The Genome Defense
The Genome Defense: Inside the Epic Legal Battle to Determine Who Owns Your DNA | Jorge L. Contreras
3 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
In this riveting, behind-the-scenes courtroom drama, a brilliant legal team battles corporate greed and government overreach for our fundamental right to control our genes. When attorney Chris Hansen learned that the U.S. government was issuing patents for human genes to biotech companies, his first thought was, How can a corporation own what makes us who we are? Then he discovered that women were being charged exorbitant fees to test for hereditary breast and ovarian cancers, tests they desperately neededall because Myriad Genetics had patented the famous BRCA genes. So he sued them. Jorge L. Contreras, one of the nations foremost authorities on human genetics law, has devoted years to investigating the groundbreaking civil rights case known as AMP v. Myriad. In The Genome Defense Contreras gives us the view from inside as Hansen and his team of ACLU lawyers, along with a committed group of activists, scientists, and physicians, take their one-in-a-million case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Contreras interviewed more than a hundred key players involved in all aspects of the casefrom judges and policy makers to ethicists and genetic counselors, as well as cancer survivors and those whose lives would be impacted by the decisionexpertly weaving together their stories into a fascinating narrative of this pivotal moment in history. The Genome Defense is a powerful and compelling story about how society must balance scientific discovery with corporate profits and the rights of all people.

This book is dense AF, but if you have an interest in the intersection of science and law, it may be good for you. I enjoyed it!

The debate was over whether you could patent genes. A small lab had patented BRCA1 and BRCA2, the breast/ovarian cancer genes, and were the only ones that could test for it, leaving some without coverage to take the $3k test. The ACLU took on the company and made it to the Supreme Court. Truly groundbreaking!

Cinfhen It started off light enough but by about chapter 4 I lost ALL INTEREST!! SO DENSE!!! it‘s a shame because I know there‘s a great story to be told but this book was wayyyy over my head 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I think it‘s a great book but not one I‘d recommend to everyone. My interests intersect there pretty well, though. 👍🏻 3y

Small #NewReleaseTuesday this week. Contreras‘ book looks into the ACLU case against the company trying to patent the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. It‘s sad that science has become so commercialized. Looking forward to this nerdy read. #NerdVibes 🤓

Next week there are four books on Tuesday, so keep your eyes peeled! Have a great day!

Cinfhen This nerdy read actually sounds fascinating!!! And I can‘t wait to see what‘s coming next week 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 3y
MicheleinPhilly How can you patent a gene? 🙄 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen it is fascinating so far!! I‘m 15% in! 3y

Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly the company that is key in its discovery wants to make money off testing for it. Harvard tried to patent an actual living mouse (and its progeny). 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
MicheleinPhilly UGH! I hate everyone! *Can you tell I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today?* 3y
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly yeah, some people definitely suck!! 3y
