Lilac Bush
Lilac Bush: A Poetic Journey and Cultural Awakening for Future Generations | Pamela C. Nwokeji
6 posts | 2 read
This African-American author takes a poetic journey into her past to analyze Black American culture's impact on her life. She challenges Black Americans to reach deep within themselves to address a deteriorating culture such as prevalent fatherlessness, lack of safety for children, lack of higher education, self-degradation, and more. Under the Lilac Bush, you will find poems of joy, laughter, strength, and pain. This book is a combination of a poetic memoir and a voice of concern for the societal state of today's African American culture. This poet takes readers on a journey of her life. She tells of experiences that impacted her and her loved ones. These experiences are not uncommon among Black American families today. In this poetry, the reader will take part in the nostalgic joys of growing up in an urban neighborhood. The reader will also enter into a world of turmoil and pain from a Black American child's perspective. This poetry turns to parents and addresses a deteriorating, degrading culture that affects and impacts their children. This author shares these poems with readers in hope that they will become a catalyst for change for the benefit of children for generations to come. This poetry encourages readers and leads them to a path of success through education, hard work, and perseverance. These poems intertwine spirituality, love, family, children, hope, and successful breakthrough.

While the author covers some really important topics in this book, poetry really is a matter of personal preference. This wasn‘t the right collection for me, but you should check it out!

Pickpick

Nwokeji‘s work revels in the specifics. Poems like “Kensington Street” and “Boulevard Wall” and “Through a Child's Eyes“ stand out as bright, tangible pieces of verse. Obviously intended for a Black readership, but accessible to all, Pamela Nwokeji sought to share something deeply personal when she chose to publish this collection. Her stated intention is to start conversations that have gone too long unvoiced and in that, I pray she succeeds.
