Beautifully written and deep.
“Art hurts ,art urges voyages-and it is easier to stay at home.” Today is the birthday of Gwendolyn Brooks (1917-2000)She was the first African American to win the Pulitzer. It was for her poetry collection Annie Allen.I felt I missed out on a lot not finding her sooner, a writer of power and one who pulled no punches when writing of the human condition.
One thing I learned reading this: in 2011 the british government destroyed or hid over a million documents relating the colonial crimes of the british. This is a country that claims to venerate history; museums, historic sites, archives, all dedicated to keeping a record of the past. That the british government can destroy the historical record in this way is revealing. The axe deliberately erasing what the tree remembers.
I dread the day that we have this conversation with our boys but we must equip them with any and every tool available to them.

I keep fighting voices in my mind that say I‘m not enough
Every single lie that tells me I will never measure up
Am I more than just the sum of every high and every low?
Remind me once again just who I am, because I need to know (ooh oh)
This verse could be printed on the back of this book.
