Lifting the Veil
Lifting the Veil: Imagination and the Kingdom of God | Malcolm Guite
4 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
From the first moment that he proclaims the Kingdom of God, Jesus appeals to our imagination. He makes that appeal through the parables of the kingdom, the paradoxes of the gospel, the enigmatic and beautiful signs he gave in his miracles and in those moments when the heavens open and the ordinary is transfigured, seen in an utterly new light. In this book Guite revisits and expands on the insights he gave in his Laing Lectures at Regent College, exploring how the creative work of poets and other artists can lift the veil a little and kindle our imaginations for Christ.

“In the coming of Christ, the veil is lifted—lifted not only from the world but from our hearts. In Christ we encounter not only what Chesterton called the ‘buried sunrise of wonder,‘ but also the long-veiled image of God, in all His beauty, truth, and goodness. That hidden image is suddenly revealed through Christ, deep within ourselves, and in all others whom He sends to meet us—in whom He comes to meet us.”

Pickpick

This book was adapted from a series of lectures—a sort of defense of the imagination as a vital source of understanding. Guite examines Christian Scripture and art (poetry, paintings, and more) as he explores the role of the imagination for the Christian artist. There were so many excellent passages throughout—the scholarship and wisdom of this volume was inspiring. This was my November #BookSpin (catching up on those reviews!)

“I firmly believe—indeed, it is the core of my Christian hope—that the veil of our mourning will be lifted; that the dark glass through which we presently see will be brightened; that the persecutions and hatreds that seem so rife in our world are not the core, not the deepest truth about the world, but are only a veil or shadow, covering something better.”

November #BookSpinBingo card is all set up! I‘m excited about both #BookSpin picks (tagged is my BookSpin), and am enjoying the parallel structure of the titles: Lifting the Veil and Telling the Truth. I may have to also read Practicing Resurrection, Reading the OED, and Teaching a Stone to Talk, just for comprehensiveness. 😆

TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! Looks great!!! 2y
