It‘s an added bonus to the understanding/enjoyment of DCI Banks, his moods, his emotional/spiritual life, his connections to his sense of” home”. Helen Keller is an enduring gift to us all. Hoping to start this tonight.

I‘ve been mad about mysteries in recent months. This was the first series I started on, last Fall, and it‘s been tremendous. But this book is number 18, & while I love the series immensely, this book was pretty meh. The whole “secret service can do anything” vibe + the relationship with Sophie (all I‘ll say is come ON) left me a bit underwhelmed. I think my favorite of all the books, after the first, is “In a Dry Season” (number 10). So evocative.

I'm not sure what I think about this book. Peter Robinson's DCI Banks books are usually of a high standard. This one seemed to lose its way a little, paying too much attention to a sub plot that had little relevance to the final outcome. To put the main character through a terrorist attack seems a step too far too unless it will have further consequences in later books. I did enjoy the book but feel earlier books in the series were better.
