I was lucky enough to hear Helen Garner talk about her book (diary) ‘How to end a story‘ and then I brought it on the way home. Such an insightful look at the end of a marriage. I found myself shaking my head in amazement that this strong, intelligent woman could allow herself to be treated like this (of which she also shook her head and spoke about)! There are 3 diary‘s and I‘ve decided to read them backwards. I‘m half way through ⬇️

Rissreads I‘m finding reading them this way very interesting! I think this diary really spoke to me because I have also been through a marriage breakup (but my ex is a lovely guy, not a dick at all!). I could relate to her longing for her own time and space. A warm, happy place of one‘s own. (edited) 2y

And here we are at Day Two of the Writers Weekend. Ready and waiting to see national treasure Helen Garner.

So wonderful to share book love with book-loving friends. On the far left is the gorgeous @Rissreads and then me in the blue dress. The rest of our crew are from my bookclub.

We are sitting up the back and social distancing as Perth, Western Australia heads into its first significant community spread of Covid. Wish us luck 🍀🤞.

Rissreads Another fabulous day spent with you! You are a treasure x And I bought the book at the shops so I‘ll start it tonight! Can‘t wait! (edited) 2y

This is Volume III of Australian writer Helen Garner‘s diaries spanning 1995 - 1998. I adore her writing. Reading about the demise of her third marriage was heartbreaking. In the words of Clive James, such ‘pellucid prose‘ ❤️.

CarolynM She is a national treasure❤ 2y

I am in heaven. Helen Garner‘s writing gets me right here 🫀. Her diaries are being published volume by volume. This latest one covers 1995 - 1998 & the disintegration of her marriage (‘V‘ is the author Murray Bail). ♥️💔😍 #currentlyreading

MrsMalaprop @Rissreads I know you lent Station Eleven to Brett ages ago but I didn‘t read it before giving it back to you. I‘ve heard so much about it since & recently read her latest for Bookclub, so I really wanted it 😊. Getting stuck into Garner first though. (edited) 2y
