One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century . . . Simenon was unequaled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories. The Guardian Georges Simenons devastating tale of misfortune, betrayal and the weakness of family ties Instead of the detail filling itself in and becoming clearer, it seemed to escape him. The face of the man in the ill-fitting coat just misted up so that it hardly looked human. In theory this mental portrait was good enough, but now it was replaced by fleeting images which should have added up to one and the same man but which refused to get themselves into focus. The circumstances of Monsieur Gallets death all ring false: the name the deceased was travelling under and his presumed profession, and more worryingly, his family's grief. Their haughtiness seems to hide ambiguous feelings about the hapless man. In this haunting story, Maigret discovers the appalling truth and the real crime hidden behind the surface of lies.

Mattsbookaday It excels where Simenon always does: in the atmosphere, setting, and in making the story revolve around the psychology of the victim rather than being a typical ‘who-dunnit‘. But this story just got bogged down in its own complexity. The reader is as stonewalled and frustrated as Maigret is throughout, and the ending doesn‘t pay off in a satisfying way

French detective, French cake, French apéritif. Literary flavour 🙂
Maigret had quite a few clues to follow and deduce from in this story, though it was, as usual, his psychological insight into victim and perpetrator that led him to the solution.
Unusually, I figured out the key elements of the MO early on, but probably only because it has similarities to one of Doyle's Holmes stories: 🔎⚡🔨⚡🌉

Inspired by Scott's @vivastory post last week about Maigret, I'm continuing my own journey through Simenon's extensive novel series about the gruff but empathic French Chief Inspector.
These three #LibraryHaul are all coincidentally early in the series, 3, 4 and 6 from left to right. Simenon's dating of the tagged story within the narrative is a giveaway, as the later novels contain only vague hints to date, which gives them a fuzzy, ⬇️

Bookwomble ... timeless quality, definitely past, but holding onto the modern.

I'll call this a pick because it was a serviceable read at a time when I needed exactly that. An early Maigret so perhaps a bit fresher than a later installment.
