Sweat: A History of Exercise | Bill Hayes
1 post | 1 read
From Insomniac City author Bill Hayes, "who can tackle just about any subject in book form, and make you glad he did" (SF Chronicle)-a cultural, scientific, literary, and personal history of exercise. Exercise is our modern obsession, and we have the fancy workout gear and fads from HIIT to spin classes to hot yoga to prove it. Exercise-a form of physical activity distinct from sports, play, or athletics-was an ancient obsession, too, but as a chapter in human history, it's been largely overlooked. In Sweat, Bill Hayes runs, jogs, swims, spins, walks, bikes, boxes, lifts, sweats, and downward-dogs his way through the origins of different forms of exercise, chronicling how they have evolved over time, dissecting the dynamics of human movement. Hippocrates, Plato, Galen, Susan B. Anthony, Jack LaLanne, and Jane Fonda, among many others, make appearances in Sweat, but chief among the historical figures is Girolamo Mercuriale, a Renaissance-era Italian physician who aimed singlehandedly to revive the ancient Greek art of exercising through his 1569 book De arte gymnastica. Though largely forgotten over the past five centuries, Mercuriale and his illustrated treatise were pioneering, and are brought back to life in the pages of Sweat. Hayes ties his own personal experience-and ours-to the cultural and scientific history of exercise, from ancient times to the present day, giving us a new way to understand its place in our lives in the 21st century.

Can I just complain about these DNFs for a moment?

Bill, if sports AREN‘T exercise because there is a winner and loser, then why is boxing exercise? Your dad‘s handball games are exercise, so why not my tennis? #StupidDichotomy #annoying

I swear if they debated whether to call the police over the missing rare book one more time, I was going to toss my phone into a wall. Well, I can‘t afford a new phone, so I bailed. 🙅🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

MicheleinPhilly Sports aren‘t exercise??? Good grief. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3y
Megabooks @Cathythoughts sometimes you just can‘t let it slide! 😉😂 3y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain not my favs 😒 (edited) 3y
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly it was such a weird line to draw and then he kept getting his own dichotomy confused…just ridiculous! 3y
Megabooks @kspenmoll they were still dithering about whether to call the police 41% in, and I was just bored. 🥱 Glad you felt the same! (But sorry we wasted time…) 3y
MicheleinPhilly It‘s just such a bizarre opinion. I can assure you that Megan Rapinoe gets more exercise in 90 minutes on the pitch than I get in like 6 months. 3y
Ruthiella Excellent ranting! 👍😂 3y
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly it was more that he was calling it “exercise” if it were for the sole purpose of getting sweaty and building muscle. 🤷🏻‍♀️ so would Megan‘s weight or drill days count as exercise but not her games? Honestly, the whole thing was just forced. I didn‘t care for his insights nor were his ideas of interest to me. And I really could‘ve done without the picture of his dad‘s sweaty chest hair in the sauna. 🥵🤢 3y
Megabooks @Ruthiella thanks!! 3y
Cinfhen Geez!! These two books sound BAD!! #AllHailTheBail 🙌🏻♥️ 3y
janeycanuck @kspenmoll @Megabooks Oh no… I just picked Department of Rare Books up from the library and was so excited for it… 3y
Megabooks @janeycanuck someone else just gave it an amazing review, so give it a shot. You can always bail! 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I didn‘t enjoy either for sure! 3y
