The New York Times bestselling author of The Weird Sisters returns with a striking and intimate new novel about three very different women facing an impossible question: What makes a family? They look just like any other family. But they aren't a family like any other not quite. Instead, they are three sets of parents who adopted four biological siblings, committing to keeping the children connected after the death of their grandmother. Tabitha, who adopted the twins, is the planner of the group, responsible for coordinating playdates and birthdays and Sunday night dinners, insistent that everything happens just so. Quiet and steady Ginger, single mother to the eldest daughter, resists the forced togetherness, her own unsettled childhood leaving her wary of trusting too much. And Elizabeth is still reeling from going directly from failed fertility treatments into adopting a newborn, terrified that her unhappiness means she was not meant to be a mother at all. But when the three women receive a surprising call from their childrens birth mother, announcing she is pregnant again and wants them to help her find an adoptive family for this child too, the delicate bonds they are still struggling to form threaten to collapse. As tensions rise, the women reckon with their own feelings about what it means to be a mother and what they owe each other as a family. Set across the span of a family vacation, one full of boisterous laughter and emotional upheaval, Any Other Family is a thought-provoking and poignant look at how families shift and evolve and a striking portrait of motherhood in all its forms.

For my virtual book club with my beeches. We met on Shelfari, almost 15 years ago.
I probably wouldn‘t have picked this up if we weren‘t reading it together, but it certainly has an interesting premise and it explores all kinds of issues around motherhood.

Tamra The cover is striking and perfect for the season! 😍 11mo

jlhammar Lovely cover! I've been curious about this one. I read The Weird Sisters many years ago and it really stayed with me. 11mo
Aimeesue @jlhammar Lots of interesting topics in this one! It‘ll give our book group a lot to talk about, as we range from not-parents-yet to childless-by-choice to empty nesters to having older kids and having Elementary school aged kids. The letters from prospective adoptive parents are really striking. 11mo

What an excellent book about chosen family, parenting, adoption and relationships.

The beginning was confusing because there are a lot of characters, but once I was clear on which parents went with which children I fell in love with this family.

It‘s about 4 siblings adopted by 3 parent sets, and the way the adoptive and birth parents structure their lives so that the kids keep their sibling relationships. Amazing book. 👍👍

MicheleinPhilly Nice! I just bought this over the weekend because I loved The Weird Sisters. 2y
Soubhiville @MicheleinPhilly that‘s the main reason I picked it up too 🙂📚❤️. 2y

This is a well told story of a large, open adoption family. Cool plot device in comments.

Three adoptive families with kids from the same bio mom go on vacation to Aspen. Oldest Phoebe lives with single mom Ginger, and change is coming as P got into a private school. The twins live with wealthy and seemingly perfect Tabitha and Perry. The baby is with Elizabeth and John, who has just lost his job. The vacation will test the family in new ways. ⬇️

Megabooks Early in the book the couples find out the bio mom is pregnant and wants Elizabeth and John to take the new baby. With John‘s unemployment, the couple is reluctant to take it. Interspersed among the three moms‘ perspectives on the vacation are entries from parents who want to adopt the new baby. It was particularly well done with additional narrators in the audiobook!
