Trigger Points: Inside the Mission to Stop Mass Shootings in America | Mark Follman
14 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
"An urgent read that illuminates real possibility for change. John Carreyrou, New York Times bestselling author of Bad Blood For the first time, a story about the specialized teams of forensic psychologists, FBI agents, and other experts who are successfully stopping mass shootingsa hopeful, myth-busting narrative built on new details of infamous attacks, never-before-told accounts from perpetrators and survivors, and real-time immersion in confidential threat cases, casting a whole new light on how to solve a grievous problem It's time to go beyond all the thoughts and prayers, misguided blame on mental illness, and dug-in disputes over the Second Amendment. Through meticulous reporting and panoramic storytelling, award-winning journalist Mark Follman chronicles the decades-long search for identifiable profiles of mass shooters and brings readers inside a groundbreaking method for preventing devastating attacks. The emerging field of behavioral threat assessment, with its synergy of mental health and law enforcement expertise, focuses on circumstances and behaviors leading up to planned acts of violencewarning signs that offer a chance for constructive intervention before it's too late. Beginning with the pioneering study in the late 1970s of "criminally insane" assassins and the stalking behaviors discovered after the murder of John Lennon and the shooting of Ronald Reagan in the early 1980s, Follman traces how the field of behavioral threat assessment first grew out of Secret Service investigations and FBI serial-killer hunting. Soon to be revolutionized after the tragedies at Columbine and Virginia Tech, and expanded further after Sandy Hook and Parkland, the method is used increasingly today to thwart attacks brewing within American communities. As Follman examines threat-assessment work throughout the country, he goes inside the FBI's elite Behavioral Analysis Unit and immerses in an Oregon school district's innovative violence-prevention program, the first such comprehensive system to prioritize helping kids and avoid relying on punitive measures. With its focus squarely on progress, the story delves into consequential tragedies and others averted, revealing the dangers of cultural misunderstanding and media sensationalism along the way. Ultimately, Follman shows how the nation could adopt the techniques of behavioral threat assessment more broadly, with powerful potential to save lives. Eight years in the making, Trigger Points illuminates a way forward at a time when the failure to prevent mass shootings has never been more costlyand the prospects for stopping them never more promising.

This was a really interesting way to look at the mass shooting epidemic in America. Instead of looking at gun control alone as a means of curtailing them, Follman looks at community-based interventions that make an impact in preventing shooters from picking up a gun. It was interesting reading specific examples of what some school systems have done to prevent violence by intervening with children that have threatened it.

Cinfhen Not sure I want to go there… 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I had trouble writing this review because it‘s a very serious subject, but honestly I felt hopeful after finishing. I felt like there are people looking at this and making real change even with gridlock in passing stricter laws. 2y
Cinfhen That‘s really good to hear 💚 2y

britt_brooke This sounds so interesting, but I have a really tough time reading about this. On that note, the shooter from my high school has his parole hearing next week. It‘s been 25 years (in December). Hoping with all my being that‘s it‘s denied. 2y
Megabooks @britt_brooke 25 years. God. Seems like yesterday. I told you I was at GSP with his sister the summer before it happened?? I hope it‘s denied. Terrible, terrible tragedy. 2y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Crazy, isn‘t it?? I‘m friends with his sister on fb/ig and she‘s seems like such an incredible person. I can‘t imagine how she‘s feeling right now. 2y

One of the biggest reasons why I live in New York City is because it's different from the rest of this redneck, shithole country. I guess that's no longer the case.

Leftcoastzen Disgusting ruling! 2y
Maria514626 Condolences. Seriously. The whole place is going fascist and more gun crazy. 🙇‍♀️ 2y

Interesting book that goes into the behavioral monitoring of potential mass shooters and intervening when threats are made. Author admits this is one part of the solution, that the real preventive plan will require gun control and other solutions.

This book seemed like it would be really interesting--and it started out that way--but it ended up being repetitive and vague in its solutions to ending gun violence.

The insanity myth, (continued). He goes on to write:

In only three cases, or five percent of the total examined in the FBI investigation, was the perpetrator known to have a psychotic disorder.

What a truly sad and pathetic country we are. Don't fix the stupid gun laws--just give kids bulletproof backpacks and buckets of rocks. What an embarrassment this country is.

Patchshank Is it because no one has figured out how to make money from it? Because that's what I'm assuming is the reason. 2y
