My current holiday read. So far I find it intriguing. I can't wait to see how the story progresses. I haven't been this interested in a book in awhile. The only other books I've read by Hill is The Fireman and the Locke and Key series, and I loved both. I do see a bit of his father's influence in this. Something about it does have a Stephen King feel to it, but better. I've never really been a King fan. Hopefully this will be a great journey. ❄️🎄

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would. I'm not super into Christmas or Christmas stuff, but this year I've been more into than usual. I have always liked A Christmas Carol and I like that this plays on that. The ending was also interesting. I thought I knew how it was going to end, but it threw me bit of a curve ball. I liked the actual ending more then my predicted one. I was expecting a boring disappointment of an ending.

A few weeks ago I shared some depressing and outrageous articles about books in prisons. Well here is a nice one to give us some hope. It is about the benefits of book clubs in prisons.

https://www.texasobserver.org/why-i-started-a-book-club-in-the-harris-county-jai...

lele1432 Oh wow. I live in Harris County. Glad I see this, thanks for sharing! 1d
rwmg I hope it catches on in other prisons 1d
Patchshank @rwmg I hope it does too. Seems like it's doing a lot of good. Instead of censoring the prisons they should do more to encourage the inmates to learn and expand their minds. 12h

This book takes place in December, so I'm counting it as a Christmas story. ☃️??

Overall, the book was alright. It didn't have the "what's going to happen next" factor that would have kept me interested. Could have used more of a mystery element. It wasn't so boring that I didn't want to finish it. I'm a sucker for Lovecraftian horror and Sherlock Holmes. I might still read the sequels at some point.

I found this article interesting. I never realized the impact library fines could have on someone. I think it's really great libraries are doing what they can to benefit the community they're part of.
I also find it nuts they spent more money trying to collect fines than the fines were worth.

KathyWheeler I‘ve seen articles that say that libraries that have dropped fines have seen higher rates of returns for their books as well. 1w
BookNAround A librarian friend of mine said abolishing fines is the best thing her library has ever done. 1w
Patchshank @BookNAround @KathyWheeler yeah it seems like a great system. Everyone wins and saves everyone money. I can't wait to see if it catches on. 1w
Sweetkokoro My library hasn‘t completely removed fines they just removed them from certain types of books, such as Childrens and YA books which no longer have fines and they have seen a huge increase in books being checked out. Other types have a small fine increase but not by much but no one has complained so it seems to be working! 1w
KathyWheeler I work at an academic library, and we‘re kind of lax about it. We haven‘t officially abolished fines, but we forgive a lot of them. We also hold a lot of events such as “Fines for Food” — you bring us non perishable food, we forgive your fines and donate the food to the university‘s food pantry. 1w

Likely Stories | Neil Gaiman

Mehso-so

I was a bit letdown by this. It has several short stories that are all slightly connected. The stories themselves were alright for the most part, but I didn't like the endings to any of them. Or how they were connected. I think that could have been done a bit better and in a more interesting way. But the stories do have the weirdness you expect from Gaiman. Felt a little bit darker than usual though. Overall it was kind of meh.

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-illinois-prison-books-removed-inmate-educ...

Another depressing prison library story.

This one involved racially motivated censorship. Bullshit. Absolute bullshit. The prison removed several books including Frederick Douglass' memoire and The Souls of Black Folk. They even went as far as tearing the pages out of some books. I mean come on.

gradcat Sometimes I just want to sit down & cry at the way this country is headed...no, the way the world is headed. A simple question: Just what is WRONG with people? Why are they (and I know this quite the understatement) behaving so badly? 😢 2w
Suet624 @gradcat I‘m with you. 2w
Patchshank @gradcat in my opinion it all comes down to ignorance, greed, and power. The ignorant allow the greedy and powerful to suppress others. It makes them feel less suppressed. 2w
See All 14 Comments
tpixie Appalling! Interesting I researched some - the Democratic Governor of Illinois appointed the Warden of the prison, & the City of Danville has Democratic leaders in Government. So this was all done by Democrats. Banning books should never be allowed anywhere! 📚♥️📚 @gradcat @Suet624 @Patchshank 2w
Chrissyreadit @tpixie I‘m a hard core progressive- and completely blame Clinton for the prison pipeline we face. As usual the most vulnerable and least resources are further targeted and punished. It breaks my heart when we do not have true Civically minded leaders in the Democratic Party. Also- thank you for researching -👏🙌 (edited) 2w
TrishB @gradcat agree! 2w
Chrissyreadit @gradcat @Suet624 @Patchshank I agree! Books and readers represent power and that scares people. Education and hope are vital resources that everyone must have access to. 2w
gradcat @tpixie Yes, I‘m with @Chrissyreadit ... good job on the research. I‘m a flaming socialist, I think, but really, more than that, I‘m just one of those liberal dinosaurs that still believes in humanism. But I am being sorely tested in my beliefs with things going on everywhere. China & Hong Kong, for example, are on the other side of the world, but I‘m so bothered about what‘s happening between humans right there on the street! Such violence! 2w
gradcat @Suet624 @Patchshank @TrishB @tpixie @Chrissyreadit I guess what I‘m saying is ... do your politics have to govern your behavior? I think a huge dose of empathy is in order. How much more do we want to take from prisoners? Isn‘t loss of freedom enough? But I‘ll get off of my soapbox now...sorry guys! I‘ve truly bent your ears today, I know! 2w
tpixie @gradcat @Chrissyreadit i totally agree with what you both said so well ! We really do need to get this as part of the prison reform that is going on! ( starting) as for China - well i think they are in a chemical warfare with us ( fentanyl) lol so don't get me started!! I'm trying to ' de- couple' myself from China the best i can! 2w
Chrissyreadit @gradcat unfortunately people are easily swayed to believe what they are told- I worry but then I see the changes that are coming too- and without discord the bad could continue unchallenged. I‘m definitely a humanist and believe we will be the change in the world. 2w
Chrissyreadit @tpixie @gradcat I think China will also have to face change in the long game. As far as politics governing behavior- oddly there are some correlations there. What is more distressing is the idea that there is an unspoken third party of greed that operates out of our two parties and keeps our choices limited and framed in a false narrative. 2w
gradcat @Chrissyreadit You hit the nail on the head with that “unspoken third party.” I could not agree more! 2w

Charging by the minute? I find it disgusting. Private prisons should be illegal. They try to squeeze every cent out of prisoners they can. Why punish them for trying to broaden their minds? Prison libraries are lacking enough as it is. Ebooks should be utilized.

Freespirit That's sad..and greedy 2w
Texreader Horrible!! 2w
tpixie This is all so strange. So I wonder if apps are free ? They could download serial reader! Or have someone email photos of the book. Time consuming but a tricky way around it! 2w
See All 12 Comments
megnews This is ridiculous!! 2w
Patchshank @tpixie I think they charge per minute to use the tablet in general. Which is bullshit in itself. But to charge for something as basic as reading is just completely uncalled for. 2w
Chrissyreadit @Freespirit @Texreader @tpixie @megnews @Patchshank I‘m surprised they even have access to tablets. WV is punishment heavy and many of the laws on our books do not allow people to ever escape the system. I work with very vulnerable people here- but they keep electing officials who openly cause them harm and contempt. This is why the free library I keep at my clinic is so important to me. I‘m constantly encouraging people to take books home. 2w
tpixie @Patchshank I totally agree!! I wonder why this trend started. If anything other than greed? We need to encourage rehabilitation. 2w

I can't recommend this book enough. The documentary is streaming on Hulu I think. They both pretty much say the same thing word for word.

It goes into detail on the death of "the American dream" and the concentration of wealth and power to the 1%. Chomsky discusses the 10 ways he thinks they maintain and gain more power by manipulating the masses into allowing their own suppression. It will make you angry, but I found the information important.

Understanding Copyright Law | Marshall A. Leaffer

Seven of the biggest names in publishing filed a lawsuit against Audible on Friday, arguing that its recently announced AI-generated captions feature breaks copyright law.

https://gizmodo.com/is-captioning-an-audiobook-illegal-major-publishers-sa-18375...

Uh oh.
Personally I find the whole thing kind of pointless.

Curiouser_and_curiouser Oh dear.... 3mo
TheSpineView Sounds like a case of an eye for an eye (so to speak). Gandhi once said all "an eye for an eye does is make everyone blind." 3mo
LiterarySloth That would be like going after the text to voice feature on kindle. My dad has a hard time reading after his stroke a few years ago. Following along with ebooks while the kindle reads it out loud helps him. Captioning audiobooks is basically the same thing. 3mo
Patchshank The whole thing is just publishers getting greedy, but I don't see how they would be losing any money from it. I mean people will still be buying the audiobook. Do people often buy the audiobook and the physical book? They could lose sales if that happens a lot, but I don't see too many people being able to afford buying 2 of the same book all the time. 3mo
shanaqui @Patchshank I don't think it's a matter of losing money, per se. It's about the rights -- it's a primarily legal issue. As I understand it, if you don't take action on that kind of infringement you can lose rights; whether this Audible stuff is a big problem or not will depend on whether it is interpreted as a rights infringement or not... which it could be. 3mo
