Long Road to the Circus | Betsy Bird
2 posts | 1 read
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST CHILDRENS BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES The story of a girl who rides an ostrich straight to her dreams from the award-winning writer and librarian Betsy Bird, illustrated by Caldecott Medalist David Small. "[A] charming, wacky novel." The New York Times Twelve-year-old Suzy Bowles is tired of summers filled with chores on her family farm in Burr Oak, Michigan, and desperate to see the world. When her wayward uncle moves back home to the farm, only to skip his chores every morning for mysterious reasons, Suzy decides to find out what he's up to once and for all. And that's when she meets legendary former circus queen Madame Marantette and her ostriches. Before long, Suzy finds herself caught-up in the fast-paced, hilarious world of ostrich riding, a rollicking adventure that just might be her ticket out of Burr Oak. Beautifully told by one of our best librarians. Jon Scieszka, First National Ambassador of Young Peoples Literature

I was in the mood for a middle grade binge, so I had a lot of fun at the library this week. Which one should I start with?

smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves Have you read any of these? Any thoughts? 😊 2y
BucklingBookshelves I haven‘t read any of them yet, but my mom & aunt borrowed Calpurnia Tate from my Newbery shelves and enjoyed it! The sequel as well. Pax is on my TBR, but I forget where I heard it recommended. 🤔 2y
BucklingBookshelves And I have the Ickabog on audio because it‘s narrated by Stephen Fry — an all time favorite narrator of mine! 2y

LiteraryinLawrence I love this genre but have not read ANY of these! Report back and tell us what‘s good! ☺️ 2y
smilingshelves @LiteraryinLawrence Will do! It's been years since I've just grabbed what looks interesting off the shelves. It was so much fun! 2y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves I think Pax may have been a RAR rec originally? I know it's been on my TBR for a while. I'm really looking forward to Calpurnia Tate. I love the cover! And I don't know how I haven't read The Ickabog yet, but it sounds like I might need to read it on audio, too! 2y

Pickpick

I picked this one because of the cover. Suzy is bored living on a farm in small-town Michigan and dreams of adventure. Her uncle starts to work for an eccentric elderly lady who owns ostriches. Suzy tags along one day and eventually finds her adventure. It was a cute middle-grade story.
