All the Blood We Share
All the Blood We Share: A Novel of the Bloody Benders of Kansas | Camilla Bruce
7 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
A sinister novel based on the real Bloody Benders, a family of serial killers in the old West bound by butchery and obscured by the shadows of American history. The winds shift nervously on the Kansas plain whispering of travelers lost and buried, whispering of witches. Something dark and twisted has taken root at the Bender Inn. At first the townspeople of Cherryvale welcome the rising medium Kate Bender and her family. Kate's messages from the Beyond give their tedious dreams hope and her mother's potions cure their little illsfor a price. No one knows about their other business, the shortcut to a better life. And why shouldnt their family prosper? Theyre careful. Its only from those who are marked, those who travel alone and can easily disappear, that the Benders demand their pound of flesh. But even a gifted seer like Kate can make a misstep. Now as the secrets festering beneath the soil of the family orchard threaten to bring them all to ruin, the Benders must sharpen their craftor vanish themselves.

𝟑⭐An interesting enough take on what the Bloody Benders of Kansas might have been like, albeit a tad boring one. The story lacked something for me…something that maybe would‘ve made it all a little more compelling to listen to. Maybe that‘s what happens with the business of murder…and maybe, it was exactly what it needed to be. I guess what I‘m trying to say is…three-star reviews are a pain in the butt to articulate.😏I love my graphic, though.

This fictionalization of the Bloody Bender family certainly makes for a darker subject than my book club typically flocks too…they‘re bloody indeed, with a murderous backstory before their arrival in KS where they start offing their guests at their primitive B&B. Bruce weaves in spiritualism, jealousy & backstory into this account. Told from three perspectives, the audio performance is great by all the readers. Hanson is less vile than the others!

rubyslippersreads Didn‘t Laura Ingalls Wilder encounter the Benders? (Not a story suitable for the Little House books.) 9mo
TorieStorieS @rubyslippersreads In the author‘s note, Bruce says that Wilder claimed her dad was in the vigilante mob that went after them, but I guess that‘s been proven to not be true… but yes, definitely not suitable for the Little House series! 😳 9mo
rubyslippersreads @TorieStorieS There‘s another book on the subject that I haven‘t read yet: 9mo
TorieStorieS @rubyslippersreads Ooo! Stacking!! Thanks for letting me know!! 🥰 9mo

Bruce fills in the many blanks with a notorious serial killer family in 1800s Kansas who murdered visitors to their prairie inn. I enjoyed her interpretation and listened to the audiobook all in one go.

A horror novel with historical significance. The mysterious quartet known as the Bender family from Kansas bring spiritualism and home remedies to the rural towns of the American west while running a tiny inn for wayward strangers. However, the family conceals a secret as serial killers who abuse religion and backward beliefs as motives for their murders. With ties to Laura Ingalls Wilder's father and their urban legend lore, this is a page turner

There is no factual documentation of this family, and no one knows what happened to them, making the book mostly fiction. I think this is why I could not get into the story. I had no strong positive feelings for any of the family members, I just felt disgust. But the author did create a good fictional story of this highly dysfunctional family. The members of the family just disappeared.
