For fans of Vampire Diaries and dark academia, two queer teen bloodsuckers at an elite vampire-only boarding school must go up against all of Vampirdom when they uncover a frightening conspiracy on campus. Kat Finn and her mother can barely make ends meet living among humans. Like all vampires, they must drink Hema, an expensive synthetic blood substitute, to survive, as nearly all of humanity has been infected by a virus thats fatal to vampires. Kat isnt looking forward to an immortal life of barely scraping by, but when she learns shes been accepted to the Harcote School, a prestigious prep school thats secretly vampires-only, she knows her fortune is about to change. Taylor Sanger has grown up in the wealthy vampire world, but shes tired of its backward, conservative valuesespecially when it comes to sexuality, since shes an out-and-proud lesbian. She only has to suffer through a two more years of Harcote before shes free. But when she discovers her new roommate is Kat Finn, shes horrified. Because she and Kat used to be best friends, a long time ago, and it didnt end well. When Taylor stumbles upon the dead body of a vampire, and Kat makes a shocking discovery in the schools archives, the two realize that there are deep secrets at Harcotesecrets that link them to the most powerful figures in Vampirdom and to the synthetic blood they all rely on.

4 stars- This was a fun read! While I found the “mystery“ element predictable since that wasn't the focus of the book it was still a really good book. I liked both the social commentary and the characters. I really was rooting for them! I did prefer the audio to the print, I switched around the 40% mark and I found it easier to get into, and easier to like Taylor, but that may also just have been the point I was at in the book.

Taking some time read and annotate Youngblood (I owe this book back to a friend).

So far, it's not great, and I'm finding the author is not considering most of the other ideas of vampires that have been printed over the years.

Kat and Taylor relationship remind me of Claire and Bender from The Breakfast Club.
I'm trudging through to give my friend a full thoughts in this story. #spooktober #YA #vampires

LESBIAN BOARDING SCHOOL VAMPIRES!!! I don't know what else you can ask for in a novel. Loved the central mystery, loved that Kat cared so much about social justice, screamed every time she and Taylor had a moment. 11/10. #yalit

I really wanted to love this one. I mean, sapphic vampires at a prestigious vampire boarding school? Sign me up! But it fell a little flat for me. Some of the characters were annoyingly obtuse and I thought some of the really interesting worldbuilding wasn't fully done justice.
