My Fourth Time, We Drowned
My Fourth Time, We Drowned: Seeking Refuge on the World's Deadliest Migration Route | Sally Hayden
7 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
The Western world has turned its back on migrants, leaving them to cope with one of the most devastating humanitarian crises in history. Reporter Sally Hayden was at home in London when she received a message on Facebook: Hi sister Sally, we need your help. The sender identified himself as an Eritrean refugee who had been held in a Libyan detention center for months, locked in one big hall with hundreds of others. Now, the city around them was crumbling in a scrimmage between warring factions, and they remained stuck, defenseless, with only one remaining hope: contacting her. Hayden had inadvertently stumbled onto a human rights disaster of epic proportions. From this single message begins a staggering account of the migrant crisis across North Africa, in a groundbreaking work of investigative journalism. With unprecedented access to people currently inside Libyan detention centers, Haydens book is based on interviews with hundreds of refugees and migrants who tried to reach Europe and found themselves stuck in Libya once the EU started funding interceptions in 2017. It is an intimate portrait of life for these detainees, as well as a condemnation of NGOs and the United Nations, whose abdication of international standards will echo throughout history. But most importantly, My Fourth Time, We Drowned shines a light on the resilience of humans: how refugees and migrants locked up for years fall in love, support each other through the hardest times, and carry out small acts of resistance in order to survive in a system that wants them to be silent and disappear.

Impactful and sometimes disturbing to read due to the content. How did I not know about this? Highly recommend if this topic interests you. ⛴️

Suet624 I‘ll always remember the description from this man of trying to make it across the seas as a refugee. 10mo

British barrister Simon Cox has suggested that international instruments should have initially called refugees “people in a refugee situation.” No one should have to be defined forever by the worst thing that has happened to them.

Irish foreign correspondent Sally Hayden was contacted via social media in 2018 by an Eritrean refugee being held in a Libyan detention centre. She began reporting on the humanitarian crisis happening in Libya, where the EU & UNHCR are preventing thousands of refugees from reaching Europe. In Libya, refugees are subject to enslavement, rape, torture, ransom, execution & starvation. 6 desperate people die every day in the Mediterranean. 💔💔💔💔💔

Lindy @Cinfhen thanks Cindy! It‘s a bit too stripey for me, well, that the stripes go off in all directions, but it was a fun project to knit. 11mo

Heartbreaking, brutal and raw this should be mandatory reading for everyone
The author includes texts and emails she received from asylum seekers who have been intercepted and arrested fleeing their countries and the treatment they receive from the guards plus the people who are meant to help them
Timely and honest this shines a light on the plight of some of the most vulnerable people who go through hell to make a better life for themselves👇🏼

Cazxxx This is graphic, tw for almost everything 14mo
Balibee146 An important read..... After a wild weekend in the UK and the parliamentary debate last night, my rage is at an all time high.... Stacked for when my blood pressure comes down. 14mo
Cazxxx @Balibee146 It‘s such a dark time in the UK at the moment. It‘s a very important read but I had to keep putting it down as it made me even more angry and upset 14mo

TrishB I don‘t think I could take this at the moment. I‘m seeing no light in the U.K. currently and it‘s very depressing @Balibee146 14mo
Balibee146 @Cazxxx @TrishB I am ashamed of what the UK has become... can't remember ever feeling as bleak even at the height of Thatcherism..... I fear that the populist bigotry might work again come election time too 💔💔 14mo
Cazxxx @TrishB I totally understand, it‘s a very hard read and everything feels utterly hopeless here at the moment 14mo
Cazxxx @Balibee146 My feelings are the same and unfortunately I don‘t think anything will change anytime soon. I‘m staying away from news and sm as much as possible as it‘s utterly depressing here right now 😔 14mo
