Nothing Will Save Your Life
Nothing Will Save Your Life | Nancy Jo Cullen
3 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
An explosion of pop culture, femininity, sex, religion and motherhood held together with humour and joy, this a collection deeply rooted in the messy day-to-day of life. In traditional poetic forms, it takes on serious issues such as body image, aging, climate change, capitalism and death.

Excuse the ratty appearance, my baby has been playing with this poetry book! Many poems use traditional forms while a lot of content is focused on 21st century life, including climate change and social media. But aging, death, and nostalgia are prominent themes. Also: dogs, motherhood, domesticity, Catholicism, sex ("wicked boxes of delight"), parents, and fatphobia. Often sad but also sometimes funny and joyful, even occasionally bawdy.

A warm, witty collection of poems about womanhood, mothers & daughters, pop culture and aging. It‘s always a treat to read the writings of lesbian wordsmith Nancy Jo Cullen.

FYI, vanilla is a difficult food — fruit of the hand pollinated, hermaphroditic orchid. But really, shouldn‘t we all reach into our beloveds just so?
