Even the Darkest Night
Even the Darkest Night: A Terra Alta Novel | Javier Cercas
6 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
INTERNATIONAL BEST SELLER WINNER OF SPAINS BIGGEST LITERARY PRIZE The first book in the acclaimed series: Barcelona detective Melchor Marn is sent to the countryside to investigate a horrific double murder. Before long, it becomes clear that nothing about the case is quite as it seems. Melchor, the son of a prostitute, went to prison as a teenager, convicted of working for a Colombian drug cartel. Behind bars, he read a book that changed his life: Les Misrables. Then his mother was murdered. He decided to become a cop. This new case, in Terra Alta, a remote region of rural Cataloniathe murder of a wealthy local man and his wifewill turn Melchors life upside down yet again. Even the Darkest Night is a thought-provoking, elegantly constructed thriller about justice, revenge, and, above all, the struggles of a righteous man trying to find his place in a corrupt world.

One more to add to the pile of award winners I don‘t like (2023 CWA Crime Fiction in Translation Dagger). I don‘t know if it‘s the writing or the translation but even switching to audio doesn‘t save this from being tedious. I made it halfway and I‘m out.

The 2024 CWA Dagger awards shortlists come out late this week, I think. Considering how many Dagger awards categories there are and the likelihood that 50% aren‘t available in the US yet, the odds of me reading them before the awards are announced in July are slim. So, I opted to try to read all of the 2023 winners I could get my hands on. Today‘s #libraryhaul are the ones my library system has, plus the 1st in Bishop‘s series. Better get reading!

Another wonderful book by Javier Cercas. It‘s the first one of the trilogy. I read the second one without knowing that there was a trilogy, and aside of a few spoilers I enjoyed it as much as the second one. Cercas is definitely one of the best contemporary Spanish writers.

Melchor Marín, policeman from Cercas's previous novel "Terra alta", is back! Someone's blackmailing the mayor of Barcelona and he's investigating the case. "Independance" combines crime fiction, political thriller and a analysis of contemporary Catalonian society. Cercas is one of the best European novelist, no doubt about it!
