They Call Her Fregona
They Call Her Fregona: A Border Kid's Poems | David Bowles
2 posts | 2 read
A companion to the Pura Belpr Honor book They Call Me Gero You can be my boyfriend. It only takes five words to change Geros life at the end of seventh grade. The summer becomes extra busy as he learns to balance new band practice with his old crew, Los Bobbys, and being Joanna Padillas boyfriend. They call her fregona because shes tough, always sticking up for her family and keeping the school bully in check. But Gero sees her softness. Together they cook dollar-store spaghetti and hold hands in the orange grove, learning more about themselves and each other than they could have imagined. But when they start eighth grade, Joanna faces a tragedy that requires Gero to reconsider what it means to show up for someone you love. Honoring multiple poetic traditions, They Call Her Fregona is a bittersweet first-love story in verse and the highly anticipated follow-up to They Call Me Gero.

Sequel to “They Call Me Guero”: Fregona (Joanna “tough girl”) and Guero (because of his red hair, pale skin, and freckles) are together at last. Now they will start eighth grade at the same school in the border town where they live. Guero and his pals are forming a band, but things get complicated when Joanna‘s family faces tragic circumstances…

I picked this arc up at ALA, completely missing that this is a companion book…. But it was fine, I figured out what I missed and enjoyed this story of young people living on the US/Mexico border, dealing with immigration, school, bullies, and first love. It‘s told in verse with lots of Spanish (glossary included). I think I may look for the first book now. Pub 9/22
