In the tradition of C. S. Harris and Anne Perry, a fatal disaster on the Thames and a roiling political conflict set the stage for Karen Oddens second Inspector Corravan historical mystery. September 1878. One night, as the pleasure boat the Princess Alice makes her daily trip up the Thames, she collides with the Bywell Castle, a huge iron-hulled collier. The Princess Alice shears apart, throwing all 600 passengers into the river; only 130 survive. It is the worst maritime disaster London has ever seen, and early clues point to sabotage by the Irish Republican Brotherhood, who believe violence is the path to restoring Irish Home Rule. For Scotland Yard Inspector Michael Corravan, born in Ireland and adopted by the Irish Doyle family, the case presents a challenge. Accused by the Home Office of willfully disregarding the obvious conclusion, and berated by his Irish friends for bowing to prejudice, Corravan doggedly pursues the truth, knowing that if the Princess Alice disaster is pinned on the IRB, hopes for Home Rule could be dashed forever. Corrovans dilemma is compounded by Colin, the youngest Doyle, who has joined James McCabes Irish gang. As violence in Whitechapel rises, Corravan strikes a deal with McCabe to get Colin out of harms way. But unbeknownst to Corravan, Colin bears longstanding resentments against his adopted brother and scorns his help. As the newspapers link the IRB to further accidents, London threatens to devolve into terror and chaos. With the help of his young colleague, the loyal Mr. Stiles, and his friend Belinda Gale, Corravan uncovers the harrowing truthone that will shake his faith in his countrymen, the law, and himself.

This is an intricately plotted read for historical mystery readers, especially those who like a heavy dose of the politics of the time (English attitudes towards the Irish and Irish Home Rule) with their stories, with a spot on sense of time and place and a sometimes troubling parallel to life, beliefs, and media today. This is a fascinating mystery that takes as its premise an historical event, a ship collision in the Thames in 1878 that claimed hundreds of lives. Was it a deliberate act? Were Irish activists involved? This author has again woven a clever, highly readable book around well researched history. This is the second in a series centered on a Scotland Yard detective, and I enjoyed this even more than the first. Releases 10/11. Highly recommended.

“…the industrialists especially don‘t like the sound of the Molly Maguires in America.”

This caught my eye, as my husband grew up in the hard coal region of Pennsylvania, and the Mollies were legend. In fact, we would pass the jail where those who were convicted were hung on our way to his family‘s home.

Anyone out there interested in reading an arc of this second in series historical mystery? I‘ve just heard from the author that they‘re looking for a few more folks to read and review before pub date (10/11).

The first in series is Down A Dark River (just FYI), and these are similar to the Sebastian St. Cyr series. I‘m loving so far. 😊

If interested, shoot me an email (robinb.litsy@gmail.com), and I‘ll put Karen Odden in touch with you. 🔻

Lynnsoprano Email coming your way. Thanks! 2y
robinb It‘s not necessary to have read the first one (but it wouldn‘t hurt either). 😉 (edited) 2y

This is 2nd in the Inspector Corravan series set in 1878 London. Corravan is called upon to determine the cause of the horrific collision of the pleasure boat Princess Alice and the iron-hulled Bywell Castle in the Thames, leaving 600 in the river with only 130 surviving. Is it Irish gang-related? The Irish Republican Brotherhood? Or a frame conspiracy? I really enjoyed this one, actually more than the first one. The historical details 🔻

robinb were well-researched and very interesting. I also enjoyed learning more about Corravan‘s background including his adoptive family. I like that he‘s presented as a boy who rose from humble beginnings and life on the street to a man who made something of himself, striving for justice even when he has to go up against government corruption at times. Very well done and can‘t wait for further ventures. 5/5⭐️ #coverlove 2y
