A young Emily Dickinson, and the family‘s new maid, Willa Noble investigate the murder if Willa‘s brother Henry. Discovering that he was involved, and protecting the Underground Railroad, they find that “The Reader,” a shadowy pro-slavery figure, committed the crime.

The characterization of Dickinson doesn‘t ring true and peppering her dialogue with real quotations falls flat. Generally, an unsuccessful first entry in a series.

2nd finish for #winterreadathon

This was an okay book. You can definitely tell it‘s a first in the series, and there were multiple errors that another pass by a proofreader would have solved. It is the story of how Emily Dickinson helps her maid, Willa Noble solve the murder of Willa‘s brother, Henry. Yet, the author also attempts to take on slavery, women‘s rights and class equality. I think it was just a bit overly ambitious.
