Your Nostalgia is Killing Me: Linked Stories | John Weir
9 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
"John Weir, author of The Irreversible Decline of Eddie Socket, a defining novel of 1980s New York in its response to the global AIDS crisis, has written a story collection that chronicles the long aftermath of epidemic death, as recorded in the tragicomic voice of a gay man who survived high school in the 1970s, the AIDS death of his best friend in the 1990s, and his complicated relationship with his mother, "a movie star without a movie to star in," whose life is winding to a close in a retirement community where she lives alone with her last dog"--

My book club celebrated 25 years today. We have a great group of passionate, curious and insightful readers, and our conversations always illuminate the books we read and discuss. I am thinking of my sister, Beth Kimsal Stead, who was one of our original members. She passed in 2021, but I know she was with us in spirit today. And, now, our group‘s journey continues. #FirstSaturdayReaders #BooksWithBeth

My sister Beth, seen here behind me, was one of the original members of our book group. Although she left for a period of years to raise her children, she eventually returned and remained with the group until she passed in 2021. I miss her every day. In November, our group will celebrate 25 years of reading and discussing books. I know Beth will be there with us in spirit. #FirstSaturdayReaders #BooksWithBeth

Ruthiella That‘s wonderful that you shared your love of reading with your sister. ❤️ 13mo

“So two things are gone. Dave is gone and you‘re gone. And maybe you get a moment to say for what, now, you will never be able to tell: that all the people you loved for a season had died, and that you, for years and years after, quite simply, had not.”
Linked short stories about the AIDS Epidemic and those who survived it and even those that didn‘t. I cried through every story, even laughed at a few, this is so tough but so so good.

Pickpick

Like I expect from a book about aids, this was absolutely heartbreaking, but it was also really genuinely funny, relatable in a very deep way (rather than a buzzfeed listicle way). Every single story hit me really hard and I‘d reread every one. If you think you can take the pain, I recommend this so so much

I‘m reading this collection of linked short stories very slowly but loving it so much! Really harrowing writing about the aids crisis but also surprisingly funny. John Weir can switch between emotions on a dime, I really can‘t recommend this enough so far.
