[An] inimitable combination of dark realism, satire and psychological insight . . . complicated, unsettling and at times beautiful."--Publishers Weekly, starred review In the wake of a nasty child-murder case, Detective Ray Lennox of the Edinburgh PD has suffered a full-scale breakdown. Hes placed on leave for mental retuning and takes off for a few days of sun in Miami. From there, Crime becomes an unmistakably Welshian blend of the macabre and the psychologically astute, as Lennox faces a dwindling supply of antidepressants, a bridal-magazine-toting fiance, and cokehappy locals who lead him back into old habits and leave him to care for a child. Is he really in the right shape to be playing knight-errant to a terrified ten-year-old girl? Will his best instincts and worst judgments get them both killed, or find him the redemption he seeks?

12-14-22: My 125th finished book of 2022! Tough material. Ray Lennox, a policeman from Scotland, finds himself in Florida, with his fiancé, trying to decompress after a harrowing case of child molestation/murder. Through a series of bad choices, Ray becomes ensnared in another child endangerment situation and takes off with the 10 year old to save her life and redeem his own. ⭐️⭐️⭐️?#️⃣1️⃣2️⃣5️⃣

If you might be triggered by a damaged coke snorting violent teetering on the edge Scottish cop on medical leave in Miami with his wedding planning obsessed fiancée, don‘t read this. He is obsessed with ridding the world of evil, pedophiles top of the list, and brutal about it; badge or not. Welsh is an acquired taste, but worth it in the end with finger crossing fragile redemption.

This is a dark read because it raises a lot of disturbing issues.

He weaves a good, gripping story and it held my interest all the way to the end.

Irvine Welsh never disappoints.

There is the Irvine Welsh stamp of good writing on this one, but the story (thankfully in a way) wraps up too neatly- bad gets bad and good triumphs. And because of this, I feel Welsh went on a Floridian fishing trip to get Hollywood execs‘ attention trolling for a movie deal- still an exceptional read!
