Rules at the School by the Sea
Rules at the School by the Sea: The Second School by the Sea Novel | Jenny Colgan
6 posts | 8 read | 4 to read
Its summer, but school is in session in the delightful second book of New York Times bestselling author Jenny Colgans utterly charming School by the Sea series, set at a girls boarding school in Cornwall. For the second year at Downey House, it's getting harder and harder to stick to the rules . . . Maggie Adairs first year as a teacher at Downey House was a surprising success. After making the leap from an inner-city school in Glasgow, shes learned to appreciate the mellower pace of the girls boarding school by the sea. Now engaged to her longtime boyfriend, sweet and steady Stan, Maggies just got to stop thinking about David McDonald, her colleague at the boys school down the road. Well, hasnt she? Can Maggie take a leaf out of the Well Behaved Teachers exercise book and stick to her plan for a small but elegant wedding and settled life of matrimony? Even as Maggie tries to stay within the lines, rules are being broken all around her. Maggies boss, headmistress Veronica Deveral, has more to lose than anyone. When Daniel Stapleton joins the faculty, Veronica finds herself forced to confront a scandalous secret she thought shed carefully buried forever. How long will she be able to keep her past under wraps? What does a new year of classes, rules, and camaraderie hold for the students and faculty at Downey House?

Casey and I are back together for maybe as long as a month and a half! Whee!

I didn‘t like Jenny Colgan‘s first adult boarding school book, so I‘m surprised to report I‘m enjoying the follow-up. There‘s still a fair amount of fat-shaming, but she does delve into issues around disordered eating this time. We‘ll see how that plays out in the back half. The humour seems less cruel in this one, too. I hope that growth‘ll be a series-spanning trend.

Just like with the first one, I can't get over the VERY 2000s obsession with being skinny and how that makes one "hotter," but at least restricted eating actually led to an eating disorder for one of the girls, as it would irl. I'm basically just here for Maggie, David, and Veronica at this point. (The train!!! My God!!!!!!) #contemporaryfiction #britlit #boardingschool

Even though the first book in this rereleased series garnered a pan from me (I felt even the narrator was in on the childhood fat shaming), it seems I cannot give up on a J-Co series. I still don‘t love this series, but it‘s growing on me, and dang it, now I‘m awaiting Book3 to see what Maggie does for love.

Very good. This series just gets better with every book with its interesting characters and hard hitting story ( although if you do suffer with food related illnesses then its not such a good story), which is done very well and can see the research that has gone into it. Recommend.

Roll on October 2019 for the next one!
