The Visit
The Visit | Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
4 posts | 8 read | 7 to read
As a powerful matriarchy reshapes the world, two men—old friends—confront the past and future in a bracing speculative short story by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, author of Americanah.
One night in Lagos, two former friends reunite. Obinna is a dutiful and unsophisticated stay-at-home husband and father married to a powerful businesswoman. Eze is single, a cautious rebel from his university days whose arrival soon upsets the balance in Obinna's life. In a world where men are constantly under surveillance and subject to the whims of powerful women, more than Obinna's ordered and accustomed routine might be on the line.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's The Visit is part of Black Stars, a multi-dimensional collection of speculative fiction from Black authors. Each story is a world much like our own. Read or listen to them in a single sitting.

Loved this role reversal in this novella where women are in charge and men are the ones at home caring for the children.

One thing that bothered me was the men protesting for the right to masturbate. This is not at all the same as women protesting for abortion choices or to not be subjected to casual sexual assault. Serious health problems can occur from these and the comparison fell flat for me.

Otherwise fantastic quick read.

Flip and Twist. The alternative inverted world works super well with Adichie‘s attention to detail and subtlety. Truly enjoyed the read. Good story setting the bar for the rest of the series.

Listened to this short story on my morning walk - it‘s in the same Audible series “Black Stars” as one by September‘s #AuthorAMonth. Interesting role play switch using “mirroring” to swap familiar gender roles & stereotypes, centering on a Nigerian couple.

Texreader I loved this story! 1y

There is no more pertinent book right now than this one, and it should be your excuse to join Audible* so you can listen to it. This is a world where men's reproductive rights are substantially limited by law, and men are at the mercy of powerful women. For example, pharmaceutical drugs are designed with women in mind, so imagine if you can, men may be taking medication that is not designed for their bodies!! This book is absolutely brilliant! ⬇
