For fans of Alice Hoffman and Kate Morton, The White Hare is a spellbinding novel about mothers and daughters finding a new home for themselves, the secrets they try to bury, and the local legends that may change their lives. In the far west of Cornwall lies the White Valley, which cuts deeply through bluebell woods down to the sea at White Cove. The valley has a long and bloody history, laced with folklore, and in it sits a house above the beach that has lain neglected since the war. It comes with a reputation and a strange atmosphere, which is why mother and daughter Magdalena and Mila manage to acquire it so cheaply in the fateful summer of 1954. Magda has grand plans to restore the house to its former glory as a venue for glittering parties, where the rich and celebrated gathered for cocktails and for bracing walks along the coast. Her grown daughter, Mila, just wants to escape the scandal in her past and make a safe and happy home for her little girl, Janey, a solitary, precocious child blessed with a vivid imagination, much of which she pours into stories about her magical plush toy, Rabbit. But Janeys rabbit isnt the only magical being around. Legend has it that an enchanted white hare may be seen running through the woods. Is it an ill omen or a blessing? As Mila, her mother, and her young daughter adjust to life in this mysterious place, they will have to reckon with their own pasts and with the secrets that have been haunting the White Valley for decades.

This was an enjoyable read about three generations of women (one being a child) as they move to Cornwall, England for a new start. They move into White Cove and explore the mysteries that surround it and some Cornish folklore. The book does move at a slower pace but it suited the story. I did find that even though it is set in the 1950s, I kept thinking we were in current time (except when the war was brought up).

Beautiful morning for a little backyard read with an iced coffee from our local coffee shop. I'm enjoying the book so far and I'm curious to see where it leads as I read on.

Going to start the tagged book tonight with some sea salt chips. It was a rainy day but looks like I'm getting a sunny evening to read. I think this book won't be as intense as River Sing Me Home and I need that for my next book.

The writing in this story is beautiful, almost as beautiful as this cover (I can‘t stop looking at it!). The lyrical nature of the writing definitely helps the feeling of history, folklore, and superstitions. I can see why this would be compared to Kate Morton‘s stories with one exception: this doesn‘t have a clear core mystery running through it. Towards the end the “mystery” revealed itself, something I didn‘t even know I should be wondering ⬇️

candc320 Cont‘d: about since it didn‘t feel like it was going to be that important and kind of seemed obvious. Nitpicking a little I also thought the young daughter in the story was pretty bratty which always annoys me. But regardless I really enjoyed this story and will need to seek out more by this author! 🌟🌟🌟🌟 1y

We‘ve had our new puppy for a few months now and I‘ve really been looking forward to him settling down and being my little lap dog/reading buddy. How‘s it going so far you might ask? Well, he never settles down and can‘t stand when I read because it means I‘m not playing with him 🤣. He will literally lay himself across my book to make me stop!

SamAnne Hah! Give it another year and a half! 1y
candc320 @SamAnne I‘m holding out hope 🤣🤞 1y
Megabooks My Molly does that too, but less so now that she‘s 2. Very cute pup!! 🤩 1y
candc320 Thanks @Megabooks ! I‘ll keep hoping he‘ll settle down in a year or so 🤣 1y

This is an atmospheric historical fiction set in 1954 England and it has a slight touch of the supernatural. I loved the many strong female characters and enjoyed the relationship between Mila and her daughter Janey. The supernatural component involves a legendary white hare....which is a real myth from the area. If you are a Kate Morton fan I suggest you give this one a try. I enjoyed it. 4/5 stars
