Magic in the blood. Danger in the streets. A Charm of Magpies, Book 2 Lord Crane has never had a lover quite as elusive as Stephen Day. True, Stephens job as justiciar requires secrecy, but the magicians disappearing act bothers Crane more than it should. When a blackmailer threatens to expose their illicit relationship, Crane knows a smart man would hop the first ship bound for China. But something unexpectedly stops him. His heart. Stephen has problems of his own. As he investigates a plague of giant rats sweeping London, his sudden increase in power, boosted by his blood-and-sex bond with Crane, is rousing suspicion that hes turned warlock. With all eyes watching him, the threat of exposure grows. Stephen could lose his friends, his job and his liberty over his relationship with Crane. Hes not sure if he can take that risk much longer. And Crane isnt sure if he can ask him to. The rats are closing in, and something has to give... Warning: Contains m/m sex (on desks), blackmail, dark pasts, a domineering earl, a magician on the edge, vampire ghosts (possibly), and the giant rats of Sumatra.

I didn't always love this one in the past because there's a lot of uncertainty in Crane and Stephen's connection, but they do talk it out and figure things out, and there's a lovely scene where they finally talk about love. The mystery is okay, and the introduction of Esther and a bit more of the background of Stephen's life as a justiciar is awesome.

Pretty much no POV from Stephen in this book, unlike the first. Missed that!

Ahhh the relationship development is lovely, and Merrick has some great one-liners. (Paraphrased: “Since when have you cooperated with the law?“ asks another character, not sure why Merrick is encouraging her to cooperate with Stephen. “Since his lordship's been fucking it,“ replies Merrick.)

Loved the scene where Esther and her husband find out, as well.

Lord Crane's and Stephen Day's professional and personal lives become more entwined when Stephen asks Lucien to act as interpreter when he needs to contact some Chinese shamans.

Again, a quick and entertaining read, though once I'd finished I would have been hard pressed to tell you what it was about. I found the companion short piece much more memorable.

The building was empty except for Merrick when they arrived. Crane made brief introductions, and the two of them stood with the three justiciars in Crane‘s office, looking at the dead rat Janossi had dumped on the floor.

Merrick poked it thoughtfully with the toe of his boot. “Giant rats. Sumatra business, is this, my lord?”

“I don‘t know yet.”
