Someone Else's Skin
Someone Else's Skin: Introducing Detective Inspector Marnie Rome | Sarah Hilary
12 posts | 10 read | 9 to read
Winner of the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award and Nominated for a Macavity Award for Best First Mystery Novel No two victims are alike. DI Marnie Rome knows this better than most. Five years ago, her family home was the scene of a shocking and bloody crime that left her parents dead and her foster brother in prison. Marnie doesnt talk much about her personal life, preferring to focus on work. Not even her partner, DS Noah Jake, knows much about Marnies past. Though as one of the few gay officers on the force and half Jamaican to boot, Noahs not one to overshare about his private life either. Now Marnie and Noah are tackling a case of domestic violence, and a different brand of victim. Hope Proctor stabbed her husband in desperate self-defense. A crowd of witnesses in the domestic violence shelter where shes staying saw it happen, but none of them are telling quite the same story, and the simple question remains: how did Leo Proctor get in to the secure shelter? Marnie and Noah shouldnt even have been there when it happened but they were interviewing another resident, Ayana Mirza. Theyre trying to get Ayana to testify against her brothers for pouring bleach on her face for bringing dishonor the family, and blinding her in one eye. But Ayana knows that her brothers are looking for her, and she has no doubt that theyll kill her this time. As the violence spirals, engulfing the residents of the women's shelter, Marnie finds herself drawn into familiar territory: A place where the past casts long shadows and she must tread carefully to survive. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Here‘s the list you made @Andrew65

Andrew65 Thanks, I‘d forgotten all about the reserves, except for Inspector Lynley. (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads @Andrew65 Isn‘t it interesting that we already decided to read Lynley? It‘s like we knew that Caffrey would be our least fave 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads That‘s a long series, likely to be at least 2 years work!!! 😳 20 books in it. 6y
See All 33 Comments
EadieB @Tove_Reads I‘d like to read Inspector Lynley too. @Andrew65 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I‘d imagine that will be our next one. Got three left for Adrian McKinty, 4 in Mo Hayder and 6 in Jane Casey. @Tove_Reads 6y
Tove_Reads @Andrew65 Isn‘t the Kate Ellis series about 20 books as well? 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @EadieB McKinty is supposed to write three more. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads 24th Kate Ellis book published next year. 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @Andrew65 We need to start reading S. Gregory as well. I‘ve got the books! And we need to choose the next Follett. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I get the impression Jane Casey hasn‘t finished yet, last one published last month. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Was it the Thomas Chaloner (13 Books) or Matthew Bartholomew Series (24 Books). Feeling I thought it was the Bartholomew books but it turned out to be the Chaloner books. 6y
Tove_Reads I think we went for Chaloner, because my library has that series. @Andrew65 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Thought That was it. What about this one for Ken Follett next, on special offer on amazon at the moment, don‘t know if that will be the case in US. @EadieB (edited) 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Right! that‘s no problem for me. I have lots of Susanna Gregory‘s books. @Andrew65 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 That‘s a good one and I‘m looking forward to reading @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB First one for Mo Hayder in many years (2014?), The Ken Follett book sounds good. Happy with either of these as the next one up. @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Mo Haydee‘s book is a stand-alone called Bonehead. @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 My library has both Follett books. I guess It matters which one @Tove_Reads can get. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Quite possibly the Jack Caffery Series is at an end. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Probably. Bonehead will be her 3rd stand-alone. @Tove_Reads 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I‘ve already got her down for three : Tokyo, Pig Island and Hanging Hill. Only one I‘ve read is Hanging Hill which I gave 4.5 stars. @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 You‘re right! Bonehead will be her 4th stand-alone. @Tove_Reads 6y
Tove_Reads @Andrew65 @EadieB I own a place called freedom, so I would go for that one next. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads A Place Called Freedom it is. If we read that one at the beginning of June. 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @EadieB Is it ok if we wait for my library to add new books on overdrive around the 15th? If the last girl is not there then I‘ll buy the ebook. (edited) 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I‘m going to try to renew my loan on the Casey book. I‘ll let you know if I can or I may have to read very soon. @Andrew65 Going to the library now. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I‘ve still got mine. 15 more days. I‘m happy to wait @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I got mine renewed so I‘m good for awhile. @Tove_Reads 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s good. What‘s the due date? 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 May 27th and then I get 2 more renewals after that each for 21 more days. @Tove_Reads 6y
Tove_Reads @eadieb @andrew65 Awesome! I'll let you know about my copy as son as possible. Can't wait to read it! 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb I def want to read all the series, not only George, but Hewson and Hilary as well 🌞 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads We will get to each of these three authors as we finish the other series. @EadieB 6y

I really enjoyed this one, a really different type of story, some messed up character

IReadThereforeIBlog I got into this series late (from book 3) but want to go back and read the first few. Very well written and plotted and they are very human books about fragile and vulnerable people. 6y

First book in the series looks at domestic violence, but it doesn‘t go quite where you think it might. Written for mature readers as there are depictions of violence and sexual references.

On the whole, I was disappointed with this one, it promised so much but fell flat. Rating: 2/5

RaimeyGallant A belated #LitsyWelcomeWagon message for you. :) 7y

Still trying to write up my thoughts on this one other than to say that it was a really great read. It was that but also much more than your typical detective mystery. I would highly recommend! Bring on book two!

I should probably stay away from the library and read the books off of my own shelves....but it is so hard! I like the sound of all three of these. #lovemylocallibrary #weekendreading

Pickpick

Closer to a pick then a so so. First in a new series with DI Marnie Rome and DS Noah Jake. What seems like an ordinary self defense stabbing in a battered women's helper, really isn't. Book 2 is out in the US but book 3 is only in the UK (so far). I should have had my friend pick it up for me last week when she was vacationing in London. Oh well.
