The world has changed. Now, when someone is murdered, they almost always come back to life—and there are professionals, called “dispatchers”, who kill in order to save lives, to give those near the end a second chance. Tony Valdez is a dispatcher, and he has never been busier.
But for as much as the world has changed, some things have stayed the same. Greed, corruption, and avarice are still in full swing. When Tony is called to a Chicago emergency room by an old friend and fellow dispatcher, he is suddenly and unwillingly thrown into a whirlpool of schemes and plots involving billions of dollars, with vast caches of wealth ranging from real estate to cryptocurrency up for grabs.
All Tony wants to do is keep his friend safe. But it’s hard to do when friends keep secrets, enemies offer seductive deals, and nothing is ever what it seems. The world has changed...but the stakes are still life and death.

It‘s really great to have a good hero. I‘m hoping this isn‘t the last we‘ve seen of Tony as Dispatcher. Fun listen as are the other previous two!

Thoroughly enjoyed this series. This was probably my last favorite entry; a little convoluted, and the main character was a little too cool with everything going on. Still, very entertaining.

Was SO excited to find out Scalzi wrote another dispatcher volume. Best part, it did not disappoint 👏 👍🏼😃

Set during a pandemic. Actually think it's supposed to be the Covid pandemic.

Tony is at the hospital when his colleague is brought to the ER who had jumped out of a moving car and was hit by oncoming traffic. Why? Tony investigates and finds himself in quite the pickle: see spoiler below.

Low pick. Partly predictable. Felt like a middle-book.

Another Scalzi win with Quinto‘s exceptional narration. I do love the snark from both of these men. This particular adventure into this speculative world where murdered people reappear at their home… alive, takes place after a pandemic where billionaires have prospered and cryptocurrency helps the nefarious underground stay off the radar. Looking forward to more stories about Tony Valdez.

One more notch on my Scalzi bookshelf. Here, the MC is your typical noir detective archetype (not his actual job), unlikable except when he is. The setting is of the “what if“ #speculative variety I like best: the world is exactly like ours, except people wake up safe in their beds after they've been murdered—it's about how that changes both society and crime.

For the third time, sign me in.
