This book is wild. And not for the faint of heart.

This will likely be my last read of February and it‘s much denser than I was expecting. Think Nnedi Okorafor meets N.K. Jemisin meets The Handmaid‘s Tale.

nelsonmatt890 I like to connect with you and read, lol. 4d

Early reviews of this book were not great and I was NOT going to read it. Then #TOB25 had to go and put it in the tournament so I begrudgingly put it on hold, figuring I might still skip it. I took a little bit to settle into it (not sure I would have made it through in print with my bad attitude) and…I really liked it. Sure showed me!

Soubhiville Haha, sometimes we‘re pushed to do things that end up being for our own good. Lol. I‘m glad you ended up liking it. 2w
Ruthiella That‘s the beauty of following the ToB! The unexpected surprises. 😅 2w
squirrelbrain Hooray! Glad you liked it in the end! 2w
BarbaraBB That is so cool! I still haven‘t had the courage to pick it up! 2w

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 I liked this better than I expected. Three teenagers die under mysterious circumstances and are brought back to be part of a magical quest that affects them, their loved ones, and their town. Magic is not something I usually seek out, and this took a little bit for me to get into but I eventually did. I do feel like it was about 25% too long and the same ground could have been covered in fewer pages. Soft #ToB25 pick.

willaful I've been vacillating on whether to finish this. Is there a siatisfactory/hopeful ending? It's so creepy and I'm fragile right now. 3w
fredthemoose @willaful I think the “good” characters pretty much ended up in places they were happy with/wanted to be, but it‘s definitely not a must read, so if reading other things is better for you right now, there‘s no reason to force yourself back to it. 3w

What do guitars, carousels, dryer socks, statues, and bears all have in common?

LOVE and MAGIC and MUSIC. Maybe. I think. I think the book showed different ways to love. From the NICU nurse to the writer who introduced her town to inventors of color through statues.

And love, magic, and music can be synonomous.

The writing, at times, was very lyrical. I'm afraid I will forget the characters and their adventures by next week.

AmyG Yeah. I bailed. 😬 3w
BkClubCare Still, I like your review 🤗 3w
Suet624 I got this from the library, but just couldn‘t get myself jazzed up to read it. Returned it today. 3w

There should be more celebrations of practicality and problem-solving had been her opinion. Fewer stated of murderers and the rich.

And here MO was, reconstituted like a dish of mashed potatoes from woe and mysteries most sinister.

#FeelinTheLove Day 3: There are #LoveIsBlind elements here between Daniel and Susannah as I find the latter insufferable at 200 pages in. I finished two other titles for the #ToB25 while reading this and I haven‘t even reached a third of the book - does it get better and is it worth slogging through? The characterization is on point but not in love yet with any of the characters.

LeslieO I love everything about this picture! 1mo
Megabooks I enjoyed this book, but I think it was how much I love the narrator of the audiobook that really pushed me through parts I enjoyed less. Love the picture!! 1mo
squirrelbrain I enjoyed this more then I expected but it did feel very long so if you‘re not enjoying it at one third through…. 🤔 1mo

Three teens return from the dead and are asked to fulfill a series of magical tasks by their music teacher in this slow burning fantasy. I really loved the familial relationships between Daniel and Carousel, Susannah and Laura and Ruth, Mo and Maryanne.

Shockingly I didn‘t hate this! I think my expectations were super low, so any enjoyment I had was a bonus. Full of strange goings-on…magical creatures and such but in our world. Heavily focused on the relationships of the 3 teenage protagonists who have died but are brought back to life by some otherworldly beings. It‘s too long but the audiobook made it manageable. And it‘s my final read for #ToB25!

sarahbarnes Agreed - it was too long for me, too. I love her short stories and this was just a so-so for me. But it was very creative, which is what I like about her. 1mo
Suet624 Just got this from the library and I'm not sure whether I want to read it now! I have so many other library books to read and this book seems to be getting a tepid response. 1mo
squirrelbrain Great review - I didn‘t expect much either but I think I liked it better than you. It definitely could have done with being half the length. 1mo

squirrelbrain I felt the same @Suet624 - I borrowed it from the library and had seen all the meh reviews but started it and liked it enough to keep going to the end. 1mo
Suet624 @squirrelbrain that‘s good to know. Thanks! 1mo
GatheringBooks Oh wow, this is your last book for #ToB25!!! Good for you. I have miles to go before I sleep. 😭😅😭 1mo
Megabooks I thought January LaVoy did a great job with the narration! 3w
