Pickpick

It may have taken me 3 months to read my #readaroundtheworld #armenia book, but I enjoyed it! It very much was ‘scenes‘, vignettes, short stories, published in Armenian in 1930. It reminded me of Laurie Lee or Dylan Thomas - gentle & poetic, with a sense of fun (the camel that sits down in the snow and refuses to budge, his brothers love of raisins etc).

But then there‘s a huge amount of violence, murders,

rockpools Romeo-and-Juliet style deaths, and as you move through the book, increasing tensions between the Turks and Armenians, along with misunderstandings and falsely laid blame. And over it all is the spectre of the Armenian genocide, which is never directly mentioned, but alluded to, with ‘the heavens falling in‘, particularly on his young female friends. I‘m glad I dug this out - I think it deserves to be more widely known. (edited) 1y

Today I‘ve been working in a very lovely pop-up library in a former Gap store, surrounded by cardboard trees.

Also remembered to pick up my #ReadAroundTheWorld book for Armenia (tagged) - but failed to photograph it. No great loss as it turned out I was holding it upside down anyway. I may well be needing varifocals sooner rather than later 😵‍💫

rockpools @squirrelbrain @MicheleinPhilly It‘s SUCH a lovely space. At the other end of the room, an cardboard artist is making a more detailed tree - he has his cardboard family around him and they‘re AMAZING! https://jameslakesculpture.co.uk/work/ 2y
