Someone Had to Do It
Someone Had to Do It | Amber And Danielle Brown
5 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
It's the perfect crime...until the accused fights back. Brandi Maxwell is living her dream as an intern at the prestigious Manhattan fashion house Simon Van Doren. Except "living the dream" looks more like scrubbing puke out of couture dresses worn by hard-partying runway models and putting up with constant microaggressions from her white colleagues. Still, she can't help but fangirl over Simon's it-girl influencer daughter, Taylor. Until one night at a glamorous Van Doren party, when Brandi overhears something she shouldn't have, shattering her life--and inextricably intertwining her fate with Taylor's. Taylor Van Doren has everything...and is this close to losing it all. Her horrible father--who, as far as she's concerned, is responsible for her mother's death--has threatened to donate her entire inheritance to a wildlife charity if she fails her next drug test. And to make matters worse, he's about to marry someone who's practically Taylor's own age, further jeopardizing her stake in her father's fortune. Taylor wants the money that's rightfully hers. Wouldn't it be terrible if something happened to Simon? All she needs is the perfect person to take the fall for it... Sharp, fresh and riveting, Someone Had to Do It is an adrenaline-filled page-turner about privilege that will protect itself at all costs and what happens when you contest that privilege--perfect for fans of Such a Fun Age and When No One Is Watching.

So I enjoyed this book. There were parts that I found redundant and uncomfortable to read but I actually liked the Rated R content mixed in with the thrilling storyline. What I liked best was the author's note at the end. It she's some light on how the story came to be. There are definitely some societal issues that this story touched on that are timely and relevant. It's was pretty good and kept my attention so that's a win for me. ⭐⭐⭐✨

This is my current read on my own personal readathon due to Libby putting out 35 new thrillers. This is a gritty one and I'm enjoying it already. It is told by two perspectives, Brandi- young go-getter & aspiring fashionista working for Van Doren, a fashion house that's missing statement indoors her and Taylor- the daughter of the founder of the fashion house. It's a bit crease but I love Brittney Pressley's narration. In in it!

Overall, this was good, despite the overabundance of sex scenes that felt out of place in a thriller. I liked the heroine even if she was a tad naive. I wholeheartedly hated the characters that deserved the hate, especially Taylor. But seriously, she went from “my Daddy‘s going to take my inheritance away” ⇦said in a whiney voice…straight to “I‘m going to kill him”, with almost no qualms once her friend suggested it.

This is a debut novel and while I did not 'love' it, there was enough there that I will be happy to pick up their next book. This is a spicy thriller with lots of rich entitled characters and Brandi...who is struggling financially while working as an intern at a design firm. It was a fun read, but felt a little light and sometimes 'over the top'. Kudos for a surprise ending though. This is a pick for when you want some easy entertainment. 3.5/5
