Trickster: Native American Tales, a Graphic Collection, 10th Anniversary Edition
Trickster: Native American Tales, a Graphic Collection, 10th Anniversary Edition | Matt Dembicki
2010 Maverick Award winner, 2011 Aesop Prize Winner--Children's folklore section, and a 2011 Eisner Award Nominee. All cultures have tales of the trickster--a crafty creature or being who uses cunning to get food, steal precious possessions, or simply cause mischief. He disrupts the order of things, often humiliating others and sometimes himself. In Native American traditions, the trickster takes many forms, from coyote or rabbit to raccoon or raven. The first graphic anthology of Native American trickster tales, Trickster brings together Native American folklore and the world of comics. In Trickster, 24 Native storytellers were paired with 24 comic artists, telling cultural tales from across America. Ranging from serious and dramatic to funny and sometimes downright fiendish, these tales bring tricksters back into popular culture.

I borrowed this from Libby the other day and read about half before giving up. The digital quality is terrible, it was really tough to make out the words! And I wasn‘t engrossed enough to slog through any more. It‘s a collection of graphic stories of traditional Native American trickster tales. I might recommend a print version for kids looking for an introduction to these legends, but personally I‘d much rather read a more traditional version.

Aimeesue Hoopla seems to have 2 versions - a 2016 edition and one from 2021. The 2021 reads well for me and the quality seems fine, so maybe they redid it due to the issues you mentioned? 2y

IndoorDame @Aimeesue oh, I hope so! 2y
Aimeesue @IndoorDame There's nothing worse that getting a terrible, unreadable copy of a book you wanted to read! So frustrating, even if it's a so-so book. 😋 2y
IndoorDame @Aimeesue totally agree!! 😊 2y

A collaboration between comic book illustrators and Native storytellers, this book offers almost two dozen tales of trickery. My son enjoyed it but found a lot of the stories confusing. They don't follow a logic he expects. I'm not a fan of the comic book style and can't tell if the stories seem odd to me because of the format or because of cultural differences in storytelling. Either way, it's an interesting book but one I probably won't re-read.

ravenlee I‘ve always loved folk tales, but the last few collections have left me with a bad taste. I get a “you had to be there” kind of vibe, is the best way I can describe it. Sometimes it seems the translation from oral storytelling tradition to written tale just falls flat, and what frustrates me is that they just leave it there. Very unsatisfying. 4y
ImperfectCJ @ravenlee I looked through some of the reviews for this collection on Goodreads, and it looks like I'm not the only one who found it lacking. You might be onto something with the idea that they take something from an oral tradition and don't put in the work to translate it (so to speak) for the new medium. 4y

I'm torn on this one. About half of the stories I enjoyed and the other half I wasn't a fan of. Some of them it was the artwork that I didn't like since each tale is drawn by a different artist. If you're interested in Native American tales it's worth checking out.

ju.ca.no Sounds great though! There are always some stories and artworks one doesn‘t like in such collections, just as long as there are more enjoyable ones it sure should be worth it:) 5y

Relatable.

A really cute graphic novel. Beautiful artwork! Pretty quick read, around 200 pages.

I loved this #graphicnovel collection of Native American trickster tales. The various storytellers and artists gave the #collection a unique look. Compiling the stories from different Native American cultures helped to represent the #diversity of Native American storytelling traditions.
