“Even in the darkest times, kindness can take flight.”
“A delicate tale of courage and humanity in dark times.“
A moving story of bravery during WWII as Monique‘s family hides a Jewish girl from the Nazis, exploring the bonds of friendship and the risks of doing what‘s right.
This book encourages readers to think about the consequences of hatred and the power of kindness, making it a good text for discussions about morals and humanity as well as teach about the Holocaust.

This book tells the story of a young Jewish girl, Monique, and her friendship with a Jewish refugee during World War II. Set in Nazi-occupied France, the story addresses themes of courage, compassion, and the harsh realities of war. This book illustrates everyday struggles that Jewish families faced during the Holocaust. It is both educational and relatable to readers with themes of friendship and family.
“People are just people, and sometimes people don‘t see that they are being hurtful.“
In the classroom, this book can serve as a powerful introduction to discussions about empathy, courage, and historical events like World War II and the Holocaust. It also supports teaching about diversity and the impact of individuals standing up for what‘s right.
This book was published in 2000, and is a historical fiction picture book. The story, set during World War II, follows a young French girl named Monique who discovers her mother is hiding a Jewish girl named Sevrine in their basement. The book explores themes of friendship, bravery, and the impact of war on children.
This was a super powerful story. I feel like there aren‘t too many children‘s book about the holocaust so this would be a good resource for students to use to learn about the time period.
The Butterfly by Patricia Polacco is a piece of historical fiction. It was published in 2000. This story is about a family who lives in France during the time of the Nazis. Monique thinks she sees a ghost who wasn‘t a ghost at all. It was a young girl who was hiding with her family in Monique‘s basement. The two girls play together until the girls family was taken away. Monique worries about them, but sees butterflies and knows she is safe.
“You are no longer safe here my dear. “We must leave home tonight” “We need to get your family out of the country”
I would consider having a book that is based on a similar story line in my classroom. This is a very important piece of history for students to learn about, and it is not something that can be left out of lessons. Picture books are a great way to get these lessons across to students!
The Butterfly: Published in 2000 is a story about the Nazi‘s invading France and taking Jews hostage during the war. I this story there is a family who is taking care of a Jewish family that is on the run from the Nazi soldiers. It is a very sad story about the realities of the war. It may be a little long and complicated for my future students, but it is an important story for them to hear about so they can recognize this part of history
“One reached over the wall and took the butterfly into his leather covered fist.”
This book would be difficult for children unless they are older. It is cool how it has another language weaves into it but it would probably confuse young kids.
The Butterfly is a historical fiction book written by Patricia Polacco. This book is about a girl named Monique in Paris. It is about Nazis coming into her village. This story is also about God coming to her to help her.
" the butterflies still fly in the sky even though. Two killed one..."
Patricia Polacco does it again. She is such a phenomenal writer and author that I believe every child should be introduced to. Although this story is heartbreaking, older children will be introduced to what Nazi's are as they read about a true friendship and what it means to truly hide. This book is absolutely beautiful.

The nazis are in the tall shiny boots and these are the two girls that found each other in the story

Great book! Wonderful pictures to describe the authors meaning of the story. Would be good for an older class room and in a social studies/history class. The Nazis started a war and two little girls found each other to make a bond, once they were found their families weren‘t so happy.
#LiteraryLove Day 13: The story begins one night inside Monique‘s bedroom in Choisy-le Roi, outside of Paris. The next day, Monique saw Nazi soldiers taking away one of their beloved neighbors, Monsieur Marks who owns a candy shop (#CandyLover) and would always have a “bright drop of sweetness” for Monique and her friend Denise. This made the war seem larger than life in Monique‘s eyes. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-83X
“The Butterfly” written by Patricia Polacco is a historical fiction book perfect for introducing children to major historical events such as the holocaust. This book appropriately touches on the sensitive topic by following a young girl who‘s village has been terrorized by terrorists. This would be used best as a read aloud followed by the reading and writing activities that can be found in the following website:
The Butterfly, a HF taking place in France during Nazi Germany is surprisingly a very happy story happening in a dark time. I don't want to share too much of the plot, but it intrigued me even as an adult! Here's a lesson plain that goes with this book: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.brighthubeducation.com/lesson-plans-grades-1-2/... #ucflae3414su17
