The Cliff's Edge: A Novel | Charles Todd
2 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
In the aftermath of World War I, nurse Bess Crawford is caught in a deadly feud between two families in this thirteenth book in the beloved mystery series from New York Times bestselling author Charles Todd. Restless and uncertain of her future in the wake of World War I, former battlefield nurse Bess Crawford agrees to travel to Yorkshire to help a friend of her cousin Melinda through surgery. But circumstances change suddenly when news of a terrible accident reaches them. Bess agrees to go to isolated Scarfdale and the Neville family, where one man has been killed and another gravely injured. The police are asking questions, and Bess is quickly drawn into the fray as two once close families take sides, even as they are forced to remain in the same house until the inquest is completed. When another tragedy strikes, the police are ready to make an arrest. Bess struggles to keep order as tensions rise and shots are fired. What dark truth is behind these deaths? And what about the tale of an older murderone that doesnt seem to have anything to do with the Nevilles? Bess is unaware that when she passes the story on to Cousin Melinda, she will set in motion a revelation with the potential to change the lives of those she loves mosther parents, and her dearest friend, Simon Brandon

Ok, I love this series. But the last couple of books have been rather ho-hum for me. This one felt very slow (pretty much throughout) and even the mystery did not hold my interest all that much. The whole book just felt a bit “off” to me. However, there was a teaser of a cliffhanger that is keeping me hoping for a return to better things. I do wonder if the death of one of this writing duo could be the cause of the “off feel” of the past couple🔻

robinb of books. I‘m also thinking this series will be coming to an end soon as the war storyline has wrapped up. If so, it‘s been a great run. 😊 3.75/5⭐️ 8mo

I genuinely love the Bess Crawford series and was pretty excited to pick up installment 13. However, while the mystery was perfectly good, if rather low-stakes, I was VERY disappointed at the complete lack of progress in the Bess/Simon relationship. It's to the point where the two of them not having an adult conversation is feeling antithetical to their characters. I wish this series would let them get married and then continue with them ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) working together, as they do so well. We don't get a single word from Simon during this entire book, and it was annoying. Still a pick because I love Bess and the mystery was done well, but I'm losing my patience with the long-term threads of this series.

@robinb - have you read this one yet?? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Bookzombie I have only read the first two, but that‘s annoying about the relationship progress. One of may favorite series, Lady Darby, she didn‘t endlessly drag out the leads getting together and I think the books are better for it. I don‘t think that is a spoiler. 🤔 (edited) 2y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks Sarah, I haven‘t read it yet (hoping 20 comes up on #BookSpin/#DBS…can you help me out there please? 🤣🤣). What‘s up with the Bimon (😂) thing…I mean, these two are gonna be on Social Security by the time they get together! 🙄 I don‘t get it! Do they think readers will STOP reading if they commit? I may stop if they don‘t…and soon! 2y

robinb @TheAromaofBooks At this point, I‘m holding out that maybe Bess will write her own spin-off series…Bess and Simon (FINALLY!) Mystery series. 😉 2y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks On a different note, do you read the Lane Winslow series? And THAT relationship HAS moved along nicely. 💍 Another good one, but the new one (coming in Oct. and the 4th) will be the last 😞, is the Harriet Gordon series. They‘re both really good! I‘ll post first in series for both here in case you‘d like to check them out. (edited) 2y
Clwojick Woohoo! 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Bookzombie - On the whole, I really love this series!! The setting is done really well. I thought the books might not work after WWI was over, but I've enjoyed the post-war books just as much, as the authors explore how difficult it was for so many to settle back into a new “normal“ life. But I would be much happier if these two characters were working together instead of pining in the distance for YEARS! 😂 2y
TheAromaofBooks @robinb - When I was posting my review on GR there were quite a few comments saying that they were ready to bail on the series because of the lack of progression between... Bimon 😂 And also apparently the mother-half of the mother-son duo writing these books passed away shortly after they finished this installment. So hopefully the son is planning to continue the series for at least one more book!!! 2y
TheAromaofBooks @robinb - I haven't heard of either of those series, but I will definitely check them out!!! 2y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks Oh! I hadn‘t heard she had passed away. No disrespect to her, but if the son writes another maybe it will be really juicy…or not. 😂🙄🤷🏻‍♀️ And I‘d love to hear what you think of the other two if you try them. 😊 (edited) 2y
Andrew65 A popular series, well done 👏👏👏 2y

robinb Your review? Ditto. 😩😂 8mo
TheAromaofBooks @robinb - Soooo frustrating!!! I think especially because Simon and Bess are fabulous together, so I do NOT understand why we are dragging this on forever! 8mo
robinb I‘m seriously almost to the point of calling Simon up and telling him to just throw in the towel and move on. Bess is just now (AFTER 13 books!) wondering if there possibly could be more to their friendship??!! 😳🙄😆 8mo
TheAromaofBooks @robinb - Right?? Girl acts like she's a detective 🙄 🙄 🙄 8mo
