It's Ok to Be Angry about Capitalism
It's Ok to Be Angry about Capitalism | Bernie Sanders
6 posts | 10 read | 6 to read
A progressive takedown of the uber-capitalist status quo that has enriched millionaires and billionaires at the expense of the working class, and a blueprint for what transformational change would actually look like It's OK to be angry about capitalism. Reflecting on our turbulent times, Senator Bernie Sanders takes on the billionaire class and speaks blunt truths about our country's failure to address the destructive nature of a system that is fueled by uncontrolled greed and rigidly committed to prioritizing corporate profits over the needs of ordinary Americans. Sanders argues that unfettered capitalism is to blame for an unprecedented level of income and wealth inequality, is undermining our democracy, and is destroying our planet. How can we accept an economic order that allows three billionaires to control more wealth than the bottom half of our society? How can we accept a political system that allows the super rich to buy elections and politicians? How can we accept an energy system that rewards the fossil fuel corporations causing the climate crisis? Sanders believes that, in the face of these overwhelming challenges, the American people must ask tough questions about the systems that have failed us and demand fundamental economic and political change. This is where the path forward begins. It's OK to Be Angry About Capitalism presents a vision that extends beyond the promises of past campaigns to reveal what would be possible if the political revolution took place, if we would finally recognize that economic rights are human rights, and if we would work to create a society that provides a decent standard of living for all. This isn't some utopian fantasy; this is democracy as we should know it.

I really like Bernie. I feel like he is one of the few politicians who care. And this is a fine enough book, but I wouldn‘t call it “a progressive takedown of the uber-capitalist status quo.” I would call it his ‘presidential campaigns in book form‘.

Of course there is plenty to glean from him, and it certainly raises my sense of a call to action. But ultimately I was hoping more for Bernie the Philosopher instead of Bernie the Politician.

Bernie Sanders is my favorite politician. As I listened to him read his own audiobook, I found myself nodding along with just about everything. He didn‘t stop working for the progressive movement after he dropped out of the presidential campaigns. His “Not me, us,” slogan lived on. Medicare for all sounds like an absolute dream. I believe criticizing our country doesn‘t mean you don‘t love it; it means you love it more to make it better.

DogMomIrene Bernie is the man! I get pumped every time I see an interview with him. 2mo

Bernie tells it like it is. He has suggestions but doesn‘t have a lot of clear answers on how to realistically fix the wealth inequity, healthcare, education etc in this country, but he brings it all up to fume about. It‘s good for Americans to hear what he has to say and to get mad about it. Loved his audio narration.

F*** yeah Bernie! I am angry that I live in a country without universal healthcare, affordable childcare, affordable college tuition, etc. I do agree that the big money politicians in both parties have an interest in keeping the status quo with some things. Am I a social democrat? Sometimes probably. This is Bernie‘s story of the 2020 campaign and the first two years of Biden‘s presidency. He discusses many problems and some solutions.

JamieArc Love me some Bernie! I may have named my dog after him. Her name is Ladybird “Birdie” Sanders 😁 2y
Megabooks @JamieArc that is a fantastic name! 2y
AnnR Awesome review! I was going to hold off reading the book until April, but decided to start reading it today. 2y

For those who have heard Bernie speak before (or read his other books) much of this will sound familiar. Still, his earnest hope and unapologetic honesty is exactly what‘s needed as we navigate these difficult times.

Bernie has a new book coming out. He offers his suggestions on what can be done.

batsy I read this brief interview with him last night. Love! https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/bernie-sanders-new-book-its-ok-to-be-ang... 2y
Suet624 @batsy that‘s a funny article… still didn‘t talk about the book! Hahaha. When I used to work for him I would remind him about Valentine‘s Day. He grumbled then about it too. 2y

AnnR @batsy Thanks for posting the link to that article. I enjoyed reading it.
@Suet624 Thanks for the information. I decided to order the book, as it sounds like this might be Bernie's last planned term in office. That thought makes me sad, as he is one of the few politicians I have any trust in and respect for.

Suet624 @Ann_Reads He‘s one of a kind, that‘s for sure. I have tremendous respect for him. 2y
batsy @Ann_Reads My pleasure! I enjoyed it, too. Nice to get a glimpse of his personality. 2y
Suet624 @Ann_Reads @batsy. Because you‘ve mentioned his personality, I just have to add that he‘s very much a persnickety old grandpa (even before he became a grandpa) with a side of very rare humor. Not much of a conversationalist but very genuine in his concern for women, children, seniors, veterans and the poor. 💕 2y
batsy @Suet624 Yes! That aspect of him comes off really well in that short profile. But so glad to hear of his genuine care for the oppressed from someone who's worked with him 💜 2y
CBee @Suet624 I am still so amazed that you worked for him. What an incredible experience 💚 (edited) 2y
Suet624 @CBee It was great intermittently working with him. When he was Mayor, when he was Congressman, and when he ran for President (volunteered on that one). Each brought a unique memory. His time as a Mayor was groundbreaking with almost too many experiences to recount. His time as Congressman working on bringing a busload of senior citizens to Canada to demonstrate the lower costs of medicine was special. And of course his run for President. 2y
Suet624 @CBee I thought you might like this video. It was as Bernie was leaving his Mayoral position but you'll get an idea of what they were saying at that time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU5RDwk2nFk 2y
CBee @Suet624 thank you! I‘ll check these out ❤️❤️ 2y
