dabbe @CBee Oh yeah, the humidity. Everyone says Phoenix is a dry heat, and it is ... until monsoon season. Then it's 115 with 70-90% dew point. Is Alabama like 90% and 90% humidity? How is this her debut novel?? Her writing is poetic, powerful, incredible. Not an easy book to read, but a worthwhile one. She takes horrible situations and injects light into them somehow. You think you can‘t possibly keep reading for the heartbreak, but you do, because the light is still there β™₯️ @AmyG @TrishB this one rocked me!

ncsufoxes I have loved this one & Betty, both difficult subject matter but so good. Her writing is so beautiful. I just ordered her new one. 2w
CBee @ncsufoxes I loved Betty as well and look forward to the newest one πŸ’š 2w
TrishB Yes, I read this one in awe of being her debut. I think this one probably contains a bit more humour than the 2 later ones, which helps you deal with the situations. But a brilliant author. 2w

Dame Cicely Saunders was a nurse, social worker, and physician. Most importantly, she was the founder of the modern hospice movement. As a former hospice nurse, I‘m so grateful to her for her vision and for making it a reality. It was about pain control, yes, but also focused on the whole person - all of the facets that make up who we are. Hospice isn‘t a death sentence; instead, it‘s about quality of life. #independentwomen

This was EXCELLENT!! It‘s about five women who are brought together by an unfortunate situation (don‘t want to spoil anything), but it‘s really about how men in power (the patriarchy) abuse their positions and end up free and clear, while the women wronged end up smeared and disgraced. I think the review from @Soubhiville said it best for me - I had this unsettling feeling almost the entire time I was reading this. It‘s good, for sure, but creepy, and thought provoking (which can lead to some scary thoughts!). Ultimately I enjoyed it, but just….holy s*** 😳😳😳 @Cinfhen would this work for #aboutreproductiverights? I‘ll leave my reasoning in a spoiler comment 😊
#booked2023

CBee I was thinking that Martine never had a choice about having a baby - her programming just set it all up and it was, basically, a forced pregnancy (though she does ultimately want the baby, and loves it, but is her programming telling her to?). Thoughts? 1mo

I enjoyed this, but it did take a bit to get into it πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Super thought-provoking with some parallels to the current atmosphere we‘re living in - but ultimately, a book about hope and how it can prevail despite unforeseen circumstances. This was my #TBRtarot for February (book with a yellow cover), and it fits #pantone2023 #oystermushroom 😊 @Clwojick

CBee @Meshell1313 looking forward to your thoughts! 1mo

I enjoyed this! I will say that I wish the ending weren‘t so abrupt - not that all endings have to be tidy, but I definitely wanted more resolution? Big props to the author for teaching me loads about deaf culture - so much I didn‘t know. Now to find a #pantone2023 match πŸ€”

CBee I‘m counting this for #booked2023 #lovetriangle 😊 You could say there are two love triangles in this book! @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @alisiakae 1mo

β€œBeing motherless was different than being fatherless. It was primal, the archetype for human suffering, like losing the North Star.”
This just put into words how it feels - to lose both parents is awful, but there is just something slightly harder about being motherless. Like you‘ve lost your anchor πŸ˜”

peaknit Amen, I‘m recently motherless and it‘s such a deep loss. I think it‘s daunting when you think that someone‘s who loved you with their whole heart is gone, kind of rudderless. Thanks for sharing this, I‘ve been thinking about this today. (edited) 1mo
CBee @peaknit I am so sorry 😒 I truly do understand how you‘re feeling, and remember how surreal it seemed. It always seemed so….wrong to me. Like, how can I not have a mom now? It still sometimes doesn‘t make sense and it‘ll be 3 years in May. My heart is with you β™₯️ 1mo
peaknit Thank you, and yes, surreal is such a good word. It seems so strange how the world keeps spinning some days but then I was lucky to have her, so I try to remember that. Take care ❀️ 1mo

CBee @peaknit yes, I totally agree. I won‘t say it gets easier, but for me, once I was able to focus more on the good memories and not the sad things, it helped. You take care as well β™₯️ 1mo
thebackyardgnome This quote hits hard. My mum's yahrzeit was just a few days ago. I'm really sorry you have to know how it feels. May your parents' memories be a blessing to you ✨🌌 πŸ’– 1mo

I‘ve always loved this word. For my Greek mythology geeks, remember Charybdis? She was a maelstrom and along with Scylla the sea monster, sent many a sailor and ship to the deadly depths 🌊

This was like a long episode of Law and Order: SVU (a show that I love). A great thriller with a twist I didn‘t see coming, plus a (sadly) much needed spotlight placed on sexual assault victims and how they are treated (often with the alleged perpetrator not getting justice) by the public, by the justice system. It‘s a total disgrace. Got a decent #pantone2023 match, I think (#blueperennial), plus this is a #roll100 pick!

PuddleJumper Nicely done! 1mo

I just loved this. I appreciated the way it wasn‘t all wrapped up in a happy bow by the end of the book - anyone dealing with this kind of trauma and abuse isn‘t going to suddenly be β€œokay.” Just another reminder that everyone and everything is a work in progress and it‘s the journey that matters (not the destination) β™₯️ #booked2023 #propernounintitle

I admit the beginning was confusing, but once I got a bit further in, I was hooked! My favorite parts are the letters from Red to Blue and vice versa - the enemies to lovers trope in a whole different and unique way. I strive to have someone write to me the way they write to each other (swoon). My only small complaint - I would‘ve liked a little more backstory on how the war started, more origin story. The beautiful writing is just πŸ”₯

CBee @Sapphire thank you 😊 @monalyisha thank you for #ALSpine!! 2mo
CBee I‘m going to use this for #booked2023 #twiststretchbalance and I‘m basing it on how the threads of time are twisted, stretched, balanced to change outcomes and such. @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @alisiakae 2mo

CBee @Deblovestoread I can understand why you couldn‘t get into it - it is a bit confusing. I tried to focus on the gorgeous writing and the letters between Red and Blue are mostly what kept me reading. It‘s also quite short! 2mo
